You know this because you receive the Gram most every day and because notices have appeared in the Bank Note Reporter and elsewhere. The summer seminar and hence the scholarship fund are perfect educational activities deserving of your support! It is time for your organization to make a donation to the fund. Whether or not Marcus Turner has specifically solicited you or your organization, it is time to make a donation. When you exercise the leadership to recognize the need and appropriateness of this support and make the donation, you will not only be supporting the seminar directly, but indirectly because you will have saved Marcus the effort of soliciting you. He can then use that effort elsewhere to obtain more donations! Bourne Catalog and Amey Profile The catalog for Remey Bourne’s thirteenth numismatic literature sale arrived in the mail within the last few days. Like most or all numismatic catalogs, it it a treasure hunt and or a wish book. As always the catalog is well done so it is a pleasure to study even if there is not a lot of prospect of material of direct interest to a military money collector (me), but there is always something. There is a copy of the 1978 Schwan-Boling catalog World War II Military Currency. I do not know if there is anything therein that is not in World War II Remembered, but that 1978 book is now a collector’s item in in its own right. If you do not have a copy, you probably should watch for one even if you do not bid on this one. It is lot 1012. Even more important is lot 1060 which includes all four editions of Ray Toy’s Allied books, his Axis book and Rutlader’s Allied book. None of these books is scarce, but they are all popular with collectors. I am sure that I missed some other lots of particular interest to Gramsters. Remey includes biographies of consignors, pictures from shows and other things of interest in his catalog. This is where I found some really interesting information. There is a bio of David Amey. David is a Gramster. He was also a user of MPC in Vietnam. If I had known that it had slipped my mind. Furthermore, he served in Newfoundland and Greenland. He collects all of those areas plus St. Pierre and Miquelon. Wow, I am very interested in the war time issues for all of these areas. David, please share some info, insights, observations, and recollections with us! I cannot help but put in a grammar lesson. Well, at least a lesson in capitalization. David is described as a retired Lieutenant Colonel. This capitalization is very common, but wrong. The name of a rank is not a proper noun and not capitalized except when it precedes a name. Lieutenant Colonel Amey retired in 1990 would be correct. You might like this example. Elizabeth is queen of England. Yes, queen is lower case because it is not preceding the name! The justification for this lesson is that because of our specialty, this error is frequently found. If you think that you can find a scholarly source to refute this, I would be excited to see it. The sale will be held in conjunction with the Chicago International Coin Fair April 27 and 28. Remy can be reached at Remybook@qwest.net. ==================================================== Editorial ---------------------------------------------------- Carlson Chambliss and I had a long day working on MPC and other projects. We did some studying on Series 691 serial numbers and other interesting things. He has convinced me to go back to the calculator on the second printing numbers. I hope to be able to report on that tomorrow or the next day. =================================================== Mail Call --------------------------------------------------- Dear Editor, After reading about all the fun the MPC festers were having fun in Ohio last week, I decided to see what success I could have at the Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention yesterday. As some of you may remember from my MPC experience in the Philippines documented in my MPC GRAM submission on 26 Feb, I wanted to complete a goal of a complete CU set of Series 591 which was last used there in January 1964. Aurora Coins had a Choice CU example of the $10 I needed plus AU-CU examples of the 5, 10, 25, 50 and $1 notes. I bought them all so now have some duplicates of that series. As it turned out when I compared these this morning with previously purchased notes, I already had a CU example of the $1 acquired but forgotten two years ago. But with the $10 replacing a VF $10, the collection is complete. (Some day Fred may want to will me the Series 591 specimen book.) The $1 purchased yesterday was CU but did have a staple hole unfortunately, but I believe in high grade the $1 is a much scarcer note than anyone realizes. RAY Cookie Jar Collectibles Dear Ray, Well, first of all, you definitely should come to the Fest next year. Congratulations on finding the notes you were seeking. =================================================== Departments --------------------------------------------------- WWII numismatics seminar at ANA Summer Seminar 2001 --------------------------------------------------- Not only does the scholarship fund have an official identity but also has a bank account!
