(The claim of Larry “Ski” Smulczenski is summarily disallowed). Cameron, 13, is interested in military history. His mother, Tiffany Bueschel, is a veteran of Miliary Money Seminar II and an MPC collector. Tiffany collects MPC and is interested in other military money too. She was a key worker in the very successful ANA Money Museum World War II exhibition. Tiffany is also coming to the Fest. Searching for Joint Export-Import Coupons By Joe Boling This is going to be a short column. In 1976 I returned to Germany for my second tour, lasting to 1979. By 1976 I had spent two Camp Perrys with Fred and been exposed to some of the exotica that he had back then (he had already disposed of my MPC collection). One of the items he had was a traveler’s coupon booklet cover, as illustrated on page 305 of SB, stamped Reisebuero [Travel Agency] Riedel & Co, with an address in Frankfurt (illegible in the fuzzy scan in the book). Since I was stationed in Heidelberg, an hour away from Frankfurt, I tried to locate the company. I went to the address on the booklet, and damned if the company was not still there. I took pictures of the building (Fred has them someplace), and talked to the people working there. As I recall, they said that the building had been replaced since the occupation, but the address had not changed (it cetainly looked newer than 1945). Nobody there knew much about the TC, but one middle-aged fellow said he remembered them. When I inquired about where they might have been produced, any records of receipt and issue, or any kind of documentation at all about them, he said whatever they once had no longer existed. So the trip did not net us much, but the people at Riedel were sure impressed that someone was interested. Numbers (and Blocks) by Howard A. Daniel III A January 6 "Coin World" article by Michele Orzano has the title of "Serial Numbers". It jolted me into remembering the time when I was educated to be interested in paper money serial numbers (and blocks). My first real suggestions that I pay attention to them was from Joe Boling when we were stationed together in the late 1970s in Heidelberg, Germany, while we were still in the Army. He got me going, but I did not yet have much enthusiasm. But during Joe's influence, I wrote the second edition of my book on the French Southeast Asian issues and there are more numbers in it! But when I came back to Virginia after Heidelberg, I was introduced to E.H. "Hank" Barton. This man was the ultimate collector and researcher of blocks and serial numbers!!! He and I collected separate areas, so I would defer to my elder and he would go through a dealer's junk box before me. After the stack of his rejects was a substantial size, I would start going through it. Hank had at least four eyes! When I missed one of my Southeast Asian pieces with an unusual or special block, he would growl at me that I just missed something, while he was still looking at notes! I would look back in my rejects and see a Southeast Asian note, but nothing special about it. After I could not come up with a reason to select it, he would tell me that it is probably a replacement, or something else special, and then I would notice what he was talking about and select it. After about five years with Hank, I was pointing out notes he missed! As he aged, he did miss some pieces, but I found out later, he already had one in his collection like it in most cases. Then he told me he wanted me to drive him out to "Memphis" (for the International Paper Money Show). What was Memphis? He told me it was "the" paper money show in the world and he had to attend it before he died. That June, I drove him out to it and we stopped in almost every major city and town on the way. We found paper money in many places to buy, but we also found dealers who had packed up their paper money and were taking it to Memphis for a better price. That first year, the show was still in the Holiday Inn south of the city. We were on the bourse every single minute from opening to closing time! Hank did not even break for lunch, but I would bring him some water and other drinks once in awhile. At the end of each day, we ate in our hotel restaurant and then collapsed in our room. That first year, we each came back with a very large stack of notes and we probably did not spend $50 each for them! Hank passed away quite a few years ago now, but he is profoundly missed by me and many other collectors like Neil Shafer, Joe Boling and many others. Michele's article brought back a lot of good memories of Hank (and others who have helped me), and a lot of good memories of some very special finds in junk boxes that =========================================== Editorial =========================================== The registration of Tiffany and Cameron Bueschel is another exciting development for Fest IV. Not only is Cameron the first YN, Tiffany along with Nancy Wilson will be the first women to attend and participate as Festers. We certainly appreciate the Fest Auxiliary, but these bold women want to be Festers! Furthermore, these new registrations put us tantalizingly close to two of our goals: 40 registered Festers and 12 new Festers. We can make those goals. Register now or recruit a friend! There was a hidden down side to the Bueschel registrations. Gail Baker, who had previously registered, has cancelled because of a conflict. Hopefully, we will see Gail at Fest V (goals 60 Festers, 12 new Festers). Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Editor, I do not believe for a moment that your friend ever got close to having your coin used by the NFL. Each year they design their own coin, and then sell it in popular magazines for $29-39 as a souvenir of the game. There was no way they were going to give up that profitable venture. I think you were sold a bill of goods. In regard to the "Ebay Sued" article, I have to say that I am on Ebay's side in this fight. The only way that you can identify a bad dealer is through feedback. Ebay allows you the right to defend yourself with a counter statement. In this case we have a lawyer with too much time on his hands who is willing to take his own case for free. If Ebay can be forced to remove a critical statement written by a person who has personal knowledge of a dealer after doing business with that individual, then none of us are safe. Herb Dear Editor (steemed or knot) I recently picked up a card titled "Joint Army-Navy Transportation Identification" along with a "combined Armed Forces Bus Service" ticket: " 5 cents per ride". The ID card was valid during the PTC Strike of 1955,Philadelphia. PA. The card reads: "The bearer of this identification card is a Dept. of Defense employee assigned to: (typed in) Philadelphia Signal Corps supply Agency," and is authorized transportation on the Emergency Military Bus System, January 1955, in the city of Phila., Pa.
