From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 844 Date: Tuesday, February 04, 2003 10:12 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 844 Tuesday February 4, 2003 Behelfszahlungsmittel propaganda notes By Joe Boling I acquired this week a propaganda note of the type SB173 on page 481 (propaganda back on a face of type SB145, the 50 rpf Behelfszahlungsmittel fuer die Deutsche Wehrmacht note). I was surprised to find that the propaganda note contains a watermark. It is a very close approximation (if not original) of the watermark in the original note of the same type that I already had. Now, why would the Allies bother with that? Herb Friedman described this group of notes (there are three other messages on the same face type) in an article in the IBNS Journal 24:3. He does not describe the paper, nor imply that there might be watermarks in the leaflets. Looking at the illustrations in SB, I can see the watermark showing through in the scans of 171, 172, and 174 (all except the one that I have). The piece I have is indeed a touch more dull than the one without the back printing (the notes are naturally uniface), but the printing on the back is in the same bold shade as the red printing on an original (it does not match the faded red on the face). So, what if the Allies captured a large quantity of the German notes, and overprinted them with the propaganda message? The print quality of the dull note is not enough different that I can say one is bad and other good. Both appear to be within normal ranges of print quality and color selection for notes of the period. There’s nothing to say that the Allies might not have captured enough original notes (which happened to be a tad faded, or which BECAME a tad faded in Allied hands), and used them as vehicles for the messages on the backs. Or, it might be that the propaganda overprint I just bought is a counterfeit on a genuine SB145 (with watermark, a bit faded). Does anyone have one of the propaganda messages on a note with NO watermark? =========================================== Editorial =========================================== The Lyn Knight auction catalog arrived yesterday after the Gram went out. It is a wish book. I have not studied it in detail yet, but I will. We would like to have some reviews from others for publication. The same mail brought David Seelye’s latest list. Of course it is a wish list too, but more of note at the moment is the promotion. Dave made a big push for Fest attendance and it is greatly appreciated. If you did not receive a Gram yesterday (#843) it was sent as an attachment. We had to do that because it was the world’s longest Gram. For those who did not read it for technical problems, we will ask Doug Bell to post it at papermonwyworld.net so that you can catch up. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, Looks good [the attachment Gram]. Opened no problem in all its massive glory (think my machine's RAM had a moment of clarity, but it did the job). Thanks, Fred! Ray Sidman Dear Gram, Well, I got two of them [attachment Gram]. On top of that Webtv won't open MS Word attachments so I will have to take this over to my real computer to read it. Lot's of work. It better be good! Herb Dear Gram, I received my copy of Numismatist a few days ago. I was anxiously awaiting its arrival so I could read the in-depth article on the opening of the new paper money exhibit. I must be blind, I saw no mention of the opening. Most upsetting was the fact there was no mention or photos of the "Rendezvous with Destiny" MFC notes. Shame on you ANA for omitting such an event in your publication. This brings me to next point. Some of you are aware a reference book on MFC ( that's Military Fest Certificates for those gramsters not familiar with this wonderful new collectable) is being put together. The book will make its debut at FEST IV. Included will be a serial number listing of all known notes. Please send serial number reports to thetrader.2@cox.net so the book will be as up to date as possible. Also, all Festers need to check the spelling of their names in the listing in the Gram as the books will be personalized with the Festers name on the cover. Also, Werner or Joe PLEEEEEEEEEESE send your Rendezvous with Destiny note scans front and back in JPG or the notes and I will scan them and return them to you at the FEST or overnight them back to you. See you at the FEST IV more and more Al Dear Editor, It is great to see Cameron Bueschel sign up for the FEST. Welcome Cameron! And Tiffany, also! Warner Editor, The schedule is what confused me. You show early departures on Sunday and final departures on Monday. When does the Fest actually end? Bob Dear Bob, Yes, it is a little confusing. Sorry. Most people leave after the auction on Sunday, but there are still possibilities on Sunday. A few others stay over on Sunday night and do not leave till Monday. Sunday lodging and evening meals are not included in the registration. Hope that this helps. Editor Dear Editor, Fantastic gram yesterday. I was stunned by the long and wonderful account of the validation certificates of the Konversionskasse uncovered by Jim Downey. For much additional and complementary information, including numerous illustrations, I refer readers to the article I did in the I.B.N.S. Journal with input from Fred Schwan. This appeared as an extended piece in Volume 31 #4, pages 23-32. For further information please see WWII Remembered pages 484-486 for the Konversionskasse story, pages 308-310 for details on the various validation certificates and page 311 for a follow up to the validation certificates for a story about talons issued under the London Agreement of 1953! Included in the book are illustrations of all of these items.
