A main reason that a second conference will be held already is that barring a protracted war in Iraq which might prohibit their trans-Atlantic flying, some half dozen former German POWs who had been imprisoned in Minnesota and Iowa (as well as Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and other states) will be touring the Upper Midwest from 16 May to 6 June 2003. In addition, other former German POWs now living in the U.S. and former U.S. Army personnel who worked at camps are expected to attend the gathering. We welcome proposals for presentations to be offered at the conference; we especially welcome presentations about U.S., British, French, Soviet, Polish, Japanese and Italian POWs, as the experience of German POWs has been and will be again well covered. We also welcome nominations for the keynote speaker--either from others or from a given would-be speaker her- or himself. Proposals or nominations will be accepted until 8:00 Saturday morning, 8 March 2003, when the TRACES Board of Directors will meet to consider them and announce the conference's final schedule. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, The Colorado Coin Show is scheduled for July 4, 5, and 6, 2003, in Colorado Springs. This is the weekend between the two Summer Seminars at ANA HQ. Last year we gave a short talk on MPC on Saturday afternoon. About 10-11 people attended. This was pretty good considering there was no advertising. All seemed to be very interested, but there is no way of knowing if they followed up by subscribing to the GRAM or otherwise got involved with military numismatics. It is time to think about this year, particularly so that an announcement can be included in the Coin Show advertising and other advertising, as appropriate. Something like a "mini-seminar" or a "mini-FEST" or an "MPC Collectors Meeting". Something more than just a presentation. Something that gives the flavor of our get-togethers and will encourage attendees to get further involved. The schedule might include a couple of short introductory presentations, a pay call, at least one handout with information about the GRAM, the website, the FEST, the Summer Seminar, etc. All the contacts that will make it easy for the new people to get involved. And there needs to be a "hook" that will encourage people to attend this event. Something "free". So, The purpose of this discussion is to seek ideas and comments. What do GRAMsters and FESTers think? Is it worthwhile? Is it interesting to you? Would you participate? More ideas? My brother Don Zubris was in the USMC stationed in Cyprus in 1964 and they were paid mostly in local Cyprus notes with a small percentage being in MPC as they didn't have a PX in the capital, just a small post watering hole.
