From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 850 Date: Sunday, February 16, 2003 12:23 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 850 Saturday February 15, 2003 Ministrie Van Oorlog Tokens By David Seelye I had the opportunity to purchase most of a small group of Ministrie Van Oorlog tokens that appeared on the market in 2001 at the Maastricht paper money show. Over the past two years a few more have surfaced, but I believe that the genesis is the same. A group of the 1, 5, 25 guilder notes also appeared, but that is another story. A number of the token sets have been sold here that I did not get the chance to measure and include in my technical research. After the show I sent a form letter to the Netherlands coin and paper money dealers as well as all of the coin clubs in the Netherlands. I found out that they were listed in the 1969 edition of the Netherlands Schulman catalog. I then contacted the successors of the Schulman firm and had them find a used copy of the book. I commissioned the translation below. In the back of the 1969 edition of "Nederlandse Munten" by Jacques Schulman on page 213 the six tokens are illustrated, along with the mintages. A translation of the text is; " IX Plastic Money to Facilitate the Dutch Army and Issued by the Ministry of War Because of the Netherlands joining NATO in 1949, Dutch troops had to be trained abroad. When this took place for the first time in 1951, strict currency restrictions were in place. Every soldier then, received 5 guilders plastic money to take with him abroad, to cover various cantine purchases. This currency were to be exchanged after completion of the exercises. This process was almost complete. Therefore, they have become very rare, in particular the 5 and 1 guilder pieces. These have been replaced by paper currency. Plastiekmunten Catalog # 1475 5 guilders 15,223 pieces sprayed rosa RR medal orientation 1476 1 guilder 40,000 pieces sprayed gray R coin orientation On the centerpart of the guilder, you will notice 3 stripes caused by the color spraying, including an irregular finishing at the rim. The coins were manufactured by the Luxor Plastics N.V. in Amsterdam. The coins were too weak in the center and therefore broke into pieces soon after issuance. (300 pieces of the 1 guilder denomination were returned in pieces to the manufacturer) Plastiek geld 1477 25 cents 83,962 pieces green coin, medal, and rotated orientation exist. 1478 10 cents 90,845 pieces blue coin, medal orientations 1479 5 cents 91,116 pieces white coin, medal orientation 1480 1 cents 55,683 pieces brown medal orientation Manufactured by the Dutch Button Factory in Spakenburg. Some pieces are thicker, some even twice as much than the usual ones. These are not Piedforts. * The information here provided, were generously submitted by Major J.J.M. Hubregtse" These tokens were left out of the current edition of "World War 2 Remembered" due to an oversight. At the time of the publication, only 3 values were known. The translation leaves several questions unanswered about the issue. Was the translation of the words "in het buitenland oefenen" to abroad correct? Does the translation of abroad mean overseas, ie USA or Germany? To help me with these lingering questions, I am going to commission another translation. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== David Seelye in his great article above stated that the Dutch tokens were not listed in World War II Remembered out of oversight. That is certainly correct. I was most disappointed in myself for forgetting to list them. Many new items have been discovered for listing in Remembered in the past eight years (some nice new listings found just today by Harold Kroll (Indian Defence Savings Stamps)). Only two of those apparent discoveries were the result of my oversight: the above tokens and Romanian war bonds. The tokens were particularly upsetting. When I lived in Germany 1980-1930 I somehow found a few of the tokens. I bought a set for Larry Smulczenski and me. At the time I could not think of another person on the planet who might care about them (time do indeed change). David has measured the diameter, thickness, and mass of the tokens that he had and recorded the data in a chart. He sent the chart, but I am afraid that its length might get us into trouble. Hm, here is what I will try. I will send “Gram 850 part II.” That will be David’s data. I took great delight in entering some of David’s information in the WWII manuscript today (the Indian savings stamps too).
