We were not disappointed. The night started off well—Lyn Knight provided a great buffet. By the starting time of the auction, the room was full. All of the “regular” MPC specialists were there, that is to be expected, but the room was full of many other collectors and dealers too. The auction started with Marv’s collection and it did not take long for it to get exciting. The Series 471 $10 replacement sold for $8500 (plus buyer’s fee of 15%). Then the fireworks started. The Series 541 $5 started at about $6000 with about every hand in the room went up. The surprising thing was that most of the hands stayed up for a long time. Several were in the air over $10,000! Eventually it got down to Mel Steinberg on the phone versus Al Glaser: $11,000, $12,000, $13,000 all passed quickly then it ended at $14,000 and Al Glaser was the proud winner. The MPC community mobbed Al in the hall at the end of the auction. He was beaming and we were all excited. David Harper of Krause Publications interviewed Al for the Bank Note Reporter and we all chatted for a long time. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== I came close to passing on CPMX because of the work that I still have to do for the Fest. If it hand not been for Marv’s collection I would have passed. As it was I did not leave Fest HQ till 10PM on Thursday. I found that I am not nearly as able to make these late night drives as I once was, but I did make it to the show and had a great day chatting—and waiting for the auction—but I was too late for the many treasures that Ski, Harold, and others found. As described above we were all excited about the auction. After the auction Marv and I traded chances to tell our stories of when Marv bought the 541 $5 from me. Not surprisingly our stories varied substantially!
