From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 868 Date: Monday, March 10, 2003 10:39 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 868 Monday March 10, 2003 Report from Iraq?Almost By Murray Hanowich Congratulations on another successful and eventful Fest. I have been able to catch the Gram irregularly while on my "Tour of Duty" in the Gulf. And by that I mean my "duty" to "tour" all Central Banks in the region. Now that I have left Qatar & Bahrain I thought that the Gram subscribers might be interested in some data on the current Propaganda Leaflets being dropped in Iraq. I know it is almost impossible to add to the depth and breadth of the combined knowledge of 'Gramville" but let me try. There seems to be 3 types of leaflets dropped over Iraq. The first "drops" were in October of 2002 and it has escalated into February with an estimated 8 million pieces raining down on the Iraqi countryside. I have just seen photocopies so far. One leaflet has a F18? and an anti-aircraft gun and a radar pictured with the text in Arabic: "Iraqi ADA (Air Defence Artillery)beware! Do not track or fire on Coalition aircraft!" Second type: Shows a truck and grader with a blown out section of road with the text in Arabic: " Military fibre optic cables have been targeted for destruction. Repairing them places your life at risk." Third type: Shows a map of Iraq with radio towers at right and left sides of leaflet. Text in Arabic reads: "1800-2300 daily. Information radio. 756 kHz AM, 693 kHz AM, 9715 kHz SW, 11292 kHz SW, 100.4 mHz FM." Maybe some of these have reached collectors hands by now. It seems that Iraqi visas are very easy to come by these past two months as I have met several Japanese who were given 2 week visas. I tried for a visa last year from Cairo and was refused, but this year when I inquired in Abu Dhabi, I was given the OK (as long as I entered via Jordan). Unfortunately I can't make the trip, but sure wish they were as accommodating last year when I had the time and chance. This weekend is the Zimbabwe-Rhodesia Numismatic Society's 40th Anniversary. There will be a bar-b-que and get together here in Harare. I have heard of a WWII Peppiat Pound Propaganda leaflet with Arabic script on back (the one Joe Boling wrote about a few Grams ago) that is in a collection here......hopefully I can snag it. Just a side note: I have learned of two new books have been published on the North African war. I don't expect they will have anything new to add to the AMC, MPC, Yellow Seal, etc. etc. data, but may be worth checking out from a library. "Alamein" by Jon Latimer (Harvard University Press) & "An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943" (Henry Holt & Co.) Both books focus on the El Alamein offensive on October 23, 1942 through to the collapse of Axis resistance in Tunisia. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Maastricht-Valkenburg Show in April. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== The black hole has been destroyed?fortunately no one was hurt! Phil Goldstein stayed after the Fest for a few days with the sole purpose of dismantling the Port Clinton Black Hole. To be honest, I did not think that it could be done. Now I must say that I enjoy using the desk here in my office. To be honest with you, I did not know that I had a desk! I thought that Phil?s main agenda was to paw through collections, inventory, dupes, and the like looking for wayward orphans. He did adopt a few of those, but mostly he just worked and worked hard. The results are amazing. Most people think that it does not have a chance of staying this way. To them I say, you are correct. I am going to use this jump start to really get things going in an orderly way! To Phil, I say again, thank you. Judy says that you should come back?that is the greatest praise that there is. Ok, I must tell one other story about this event. Rather than leave Phil at the motel on the night after the Fest, I took him home to save the $45 motel fee. Judy was sleeping but awoke at 2am to find evidence of someone in the guest room. She claimed that I had not said anything to her about this economy measure. She then worked herself into such a state of shall we say excitement that she could not go to school on Monday. Judy retires from teaching in June. At this point, every day of sick leave that she does not use will be paid at a rate of $140 so my economy measure cost us almost exactly $100. This and a thousand other stories (many of which you have heard) are going into a book that I am writing entitled Travels with Judy. Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor: I have suggested this before, but here we go again. How about a mini-fest in Colorado Springs in early July? Maybe just six hours or so for some of us can't make the other Fest! Larry Gibbs Dear Larry, Well, I always think that a mini Fest is a good idea. You have it within your power to organize this. It does not require the approval nor even cooperation of the battalion clerk. If you come up with the hook for this one, you can certainly promote it here in the Gram. The hook that Doug Bell used was a MPC barbeque. The Dallas II minifest was a last minute thing and was just a bull session. There is no end to the possibilities. Editor Dear Editor, Thank you for the two-for-one #867 gesture for us AOL folks (probably a rare Gram issue sent in duplicate with two different block numbers...errr...sender e-mail addresses). Anyway, had a wonderful time at Fest IV, so sign me up for Fest V (although I'm STILL not collecting MPC...well...not yet anyway). As a result of my "spectacular" purchase of the Deutschenvolksgassenmasken-1000 in the auction, however, I am collecting German home front items including Winter Relief (WHW) stuff, ration coupons, national lottery tickets, and other stuff found in "World War II Remembered." I assume that will qualify me as being a member of the Brotherhood even though I'm collecting things from the "other side?" Guten Tag! WW Guten Tag yersef, The side does not matter much but we only recognize NUMISMATIC items. On the other hand we look forward to having you back for Fest V. Does your seminar conflict or compliment the military money event? We would love to have you as a tar?, er student. Editor Dear Editor, HELP!!! It appears I'm not receiving all the MPC Grams. I seem to be getting around 1 or 2 Grams a week. I have very little contact with other MPC collectors. I f necessary, email 2 Grams.... that should increase my chances of receiving one or the other!! Also, I tried adding notes to the AMC listing on Dougs new papermoney data base. It seemed it wouldn't acccept my entries. Any advice? Finally, I donatd a MPC note to the ANA museum. I made the donation last fall and I have a receipt of donation from the ANA museum rep. (Mr. Connell ?) (Series 481, 25 cent note). Keep up the great work with the Grams and contacts/communications!! PK6 Dear Mr. 6, You have been victim of the AOLGram Trap. We suggest that you create another email address w/hotmail, Yahoo or similar free service, then register this address with the Gram. You will receive the Gram at both addresses and not be charged for the second one. I was relieved to find that your 481 25 cent MPC is listed in the museum collection. The use of [] makes it a little confusing for which we are sorry. Editor Dear Editor, I was just at a public auction Saturday when they said "sold", then found out they had two different tie bids, so they reopened the auction with an apology explaining their error. These were very well seasoned professionals (even though they were out here in cowpatch "cheesehead" country). Cheers, Colin =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== March 12, deadline for Bank Note Reporter MPC issue.
