From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 869 Date: Tuesday, March 11, 2003 11:02 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 869 Tuesday March 11, 2003 More adventures in chasing notes By Joe Boling The last time I wrote about my personal collecting quest, I had reached Indianapolis on my first tour there (1969-70). Following Indy, I went to Fort Riley, Kansas (1970-71). It was while there that I finally decided to try pursuing MPC (at that time I was not yet specializing in Japan; I was still collecting notes and coins of the whole world). There were not as many shows around Riley as there had been near Indy--I could not find a show someplace within 25-30 miles on almost any weekend of the year. But there were enough to keep me broke. I don't remember the town nor the series, but I ran across a dealer who had an older $10 MPC (probably series 471 or 472) priced at just a bit above face value. Remember that these notes were worthless after conversion and particularly when removed from the theater of issue, so paying even face for them seemed very extravagant. But the piece was in decent condition and I recognized that not many would have been saved, so I sprang for it. Having done that, it was a quick trip down the slippery slope. I contacted Ed Hoffman and started buying then-current VN series in sets with last two numerals matched (that was the way many FRN dealers sold district sets, and Ed carried the practice over to MPC). During my tour at Riley I participated in two REFORGER exercises--REturn of FORces to GERmany. This was a scheme cooked up when we were kicked out of France in the mid-1960s. Unit sets of material were placed in controlled- humidity warehouses in Germany, and entire divisions would be designated to fly in and pick them up should the Soviets come chugging through the Fulda Gap. I was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division, and we had POMCUS (Prepositioning of Material Configured in Unit Sets) scattered all along the Rhine (my pickup point was the Germersheim Depot). I went on REFORGER in fall 1970 and fall 1971. After picking up our tracks and tanks and trucks, we did maneuvers through central Germany, ending at Grafenwoehr for tank gunnery. Following that, we might get a two day pass before moving everything back to Germersheim, putting it back into storage (a real chore), and flying back to Kansas. I was able to scoot down to Munich on the train each year to visit Albert Pick at the Hypo Bank. Of course, I was also trying to pick up whatever obsolete US notes I could while I was in Munich (refer back to my earlier columns about such availability during the mid-60s). I knew that the Hypo- Bank did not sell such notes back out through their foreign exchange window; Herr Pick had them being held for the bank's collection (either for accessioning, or for sale to finance other acquisitions). Nevertheless, I thought I'd inquire. Much to my surprise, the teller brought out a large stack of large- size US, including a $5 legal tender woodchopper note, a type I had never before been able to buy in Germany. When I indicated that I would buy the whole stack, he took it back and conferred with someone else, then returned and told me, sorry, it was not for sale--any of it (not even the obsolete small-size). I'm sure it was my greed that queered the deal; had I asked for just a few pieces, I might have been able to get them. C'est la vie. I then asked for Herr Pick, and had my meeting with him. I don't recall getting any notes in foreign exchange on that trip, even at the other large banks that had previously been good sources for them. Near Fort Riley is the town of Manhattan, on the main street of which there was a coin dealer whose business name I have long forgotten. Two summers ago I was plowing through Eldon Leasure's stock in Colorado Springs and came across some stage money. I mentioned that I had bought similar notes many years before from a dealer in Manhattan. Mrs. Leasure, who was showing me the stock, replied that it had been them--they had had that store at the time. I was amazed to find that in 2001 they still had pieces in stock that I had selected from in 1970--more than thirty years before. But since I had sold my stage money to another collector during the years that I was pursuing Japan, I was happy to be able to replace those pieces in 2001. To be continued. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== It was a great disappointment at the Fest to cancel physical training. The location is ideal for a morning swim, but solid ice makes it difficult to swim and even to run. We certainly do not want any injuries before the auction! It was necessary to cancel the swims two out of the four years so we figure that something must be done. We can get the hotel under favorable conditions through May 2, 2004. We have studied the calendar and consulted with a few Festers via telephone and we believe that the best time for Fest V is April 23-25, 2004. This should eliminate conflicts with Long Beach and the midyear ANA, but of course there will be some other conflicts. It also uncouples the Fest from CPMX. We want (and need) your comments promptly on this. The worst part of April 2004 is that we would have to wait 13 months between Fests instead of 12. Well we have a solution for that too. The same rates are available now through May 2, 2003. We can have Fest V in April 2003 then Fest VI in 2004. I have tentatively booked the hotel for 12-14 April 2003 for Fest V. I am now coordinating with the IRS to postpone tax filings one month for 2003 only. That should not be too much of a problem. When we get that approval, we will confirm the hotel and other plans. Wendell Dear Wendell, Great, we look forward to working with you at the seminar. Be sure to take your challenge coin (don?t leave home without it) and your paybook. The Bilermakers thing might bring new meaning to ?Rendezvous with Destiny.? Should we expect a new souvenir overprint on MFC 031? Ah, it just hit me, that probably means that we can use your fancy/high tech projector in our class!
