From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 885 Date: Saturday, March 29, 2003 2:03 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 885 Saturday March 29, 2003 More on 692 $1 proof/test note By George Fitzgerald This is in response to Marcus Turner?s comment on the 692 $1 MPC proof or Test notes, as Marcus calls them, in MPC gram 875. I purchased two of these 692 $1 MPCs at the Indiana State Coin Show in the early nineties; it might have been as late as 1995. I believe that I bought these from Tim Vest at $25 each. I have purchased several items from Tim over the years, mainly coins. I then bought a third one from another dealer at that same show for $30. I talked to Marvin Mericle about the pieces and he told me that he had one but wanted a second piece for collection. I told him that he could buy one for $30 but he stated he would only give me $25. I sold it to him for the $25 and I found later he sold it to Fred Schwan for several hundred, I believe that was several years after I sold it to him. I showed my pieces to Fred at the 1996 ANA and I could see the saliva coming out of Fred?s mouth. This is why I think Marvin?s sale was after my trade with Fred. We agreed to a trade for a 651 set of the minor pieces plus a lot more money. He wanted the piece then and I told him no until he came up with the 651 set. We made the trade in early 1997 and he gave me terms to pay for it over 5 months. Marvin and I purchased a 651 10-cent piece in an auction several years ago. Later on I was offered a complete set but only purchased the 5, 25 and 50-cent notes for a complete collection. This time Marvin, myself and a third person from Fort Wayne, purchased those three pieces. This meant that Marvin and I owned 3/8 of the set and the third party owned 1/4 of the set. We offered the set to several collectors and dealers with no luck. I finally made a deal with another collector from Fort Wayne but he did not have the funds for the total price. I made a deal with him to take in several pieces in trade---a MPC replacement and another 692 $1 proof or test note MPC. This means that I had owned four different pieces of these proof or test notes. This fourth party had a second note and Marvin had a third note which was sold this year with his collection, this means I knew that there was at least 6 notes. This trade was difficult since I had to allow more in trade for the pieces then I wanted to give. Because of the problems in the trade with both partners and the fourth party, I felt that I had to offer Marvin the proof or test 692 $1 MPC for a nominal fee. Marvin did buy the note. It turned out that the MPC replacement has appreciated a great deal even though another one was found about the same time as the trade. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== I loved George?s description of the deals on the 691 proof note. We all have lots of stories like that. Some of them are small victories, others are of opportunities missed, and even of deals gone very bad. I have told many of mine and will continue to do so, please share yours with us! We want to hear them all! Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, Fred DOES give good advice! Suggesting that AOL customers get a Yahoo freebie account for e-mail has kept me timely informed with the grams. Sometimes I get the gram both places, sometimes only Yahoo, BUT I do get them all now! Thanks, Fred, for good advice! Don Dear Don, Thanks for the praise, it seems that these days I need it! I must remind people that after they set up a non-AOL address, that they must subscribe to the Gram with that address. I may run your letter for several days because if AOL does not delivery this Gram, those readers will not receive your advice. Editor Dear Editor, I wrote Fred earlier about this idea. Apparently is has been lost in the PCBH. I don't think it would be too hard to set up a non-profit organization like the MPC Fest, Inc. or something like that. The advantages would be that travel to the meetings would be tax deductible as would all contributions to the scholarship fund. If this sounds of interest, lets talk. Bill McNease Dear Bill, I certainly agree with the essence of your idea, especially as it relates to scholarships. However, it might just be easier to declare ourselves a religion! I believe that we already display many of the characteristics of a devoted congregation. Editor Dear Gram, Since the media is always going for public opinion polls, why doesn't the MPCGram have a poll of subscribers on which side they take on the destruction of these two Series. Do you agree with selling the specimens (in some organized fashion) or destroy the total quantity? Ron Waddell Dear Ron, I gotta admit I like the idea of a CNN-MPCGram poll! In fact Doug Bell has the ability to run these polls at papermoneyworld.net. Possibly he can run this question. Certainly we will run it as a news item if he is able to do that. Editor Dear Steamed (and pressed) Editor: The 691/701 discussion certainly reach a new level of energy. Three great letters that deserve reinforcement. Colin calls this "an educational experience, sometimes rather costly indeed." A very balanced statement. Mike Cummings very astutely observes that someone must have access to a large number of notes in order to assemble some of the sets of matching serial numbers, etc. The rest of his argument is equally compelling. This suggests the marketplace is not in possession of all the facts. With 20-20 hindsight I would never buy a stock based on these facts (and lack thereof). Another opinion is expressed by Guy who says we must "protect our investments". Anyone want to buy tulips from Holland? In the interest of full disclosure (a unique concept in this discussion), I bought some of these notes and I must admit, as Harold Kroll says, nobody held a gun to my head.
