From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 886 Date: Sunday, March 30, 2003 8:15 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 886 Sunday March 30, 2003 To Destoy or Not Destroy Papermoneyworld has posted the ultimate question relating to the balance of MPC Series 691 and 701: should the remaining stocks be destroyed or saved for collectors? You can (should) enter your vote at papermoneyworld.net by clicking the link below. You will be given results immediately and results will be posted here in the Gram as well. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/poll.htm Hunting Season By Warner Talso All collectors experience some exciting moments when they find a treasure. This is a recent experience I will share with you. I have been fascinated by the history of postwar Germany as it is told in currency reform. For example, we all know the story of how the Soviets caused inflation in postwar Germany by printing an excessive number of AM mark notes. So the other Allies initiated currency reform on 20 June 1948 and the Soviet immediate response was the Berlin Blockade which led to the Berlin Airlift. Further note that, according to SB, the Soviet zone then introduced their provisional currency reform on 24 June 1984. The 24th of June being one of the more important dates in history to Festers/Gramsters/Seminarians. So I have notes representing the major currencies (and history) of postwar Germany, except barter units. Ski showed me his outstanding collection barter units at the FEST and it further motivated me to make acquisition of some of these notes my next goal. So, last Thursday I visited a local coin dealer. We have three dealers in Albuquerque and I have seen (and bought) everything they have and little changes over time. We are not in the numismatic mainstream. I was driving by and a short stop seemed appropriate just in case. I asked Jim if he had anything new MPC. He said nothing new since the last time I stopped by. I asked if he had any new military currency - making sure he understood the full scope of my interest. He said no. Wait a minute, he had some new notes I might know something about. He brought out three absolutely pristine Frankfurt barter units. 5, 50, and 100 units. My knees got weak, my vision blurred, I all but drooled on the notes. Talk about a rush! He asked me if I knew what they were and what they were worth. I babbled. I stuttered. I finally communicated that they were barter units and I would have to consult SB to estimate their value. Turned out he had a copy of SB in his books for sale stock. We looked them up and I shuffled my feet, cleared my throat, and squeaked out an offer. He then announced that he had promised first refusal to another person. And promised me he would call if that person did not want the notes. What a roller coaster ride! I am now sitting by the phone like a dateless teenager. It turns out that he got these notes in the estate sale of a retired Army nurse. These were from the lot that I got my 461 and 471 notes from almost two years ago. They had been sitting in a box he had not inventoried until recently. Imagine. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== The barter units mentioned by Warner are some of my favorites. In 1976 I tracked down Robert Branigan who created the Frankfurt notes and is the signor of the Series 1946A notes. I interviewed him on July 4, 1976. Obviously, that was a memorable day. It was at a coin show in Clearwater, Florida. The story of that interview appeared in the Bank Note Reporter shortly thereafter and was possibly the most popular story that I have ever done. Collectors commented to me about that story for many years. It (the story) was the basis of the listing in WWII Remembered. If you have not looked at these listings recently, I suggest that you have a look. Harold Kroll has a good followup story on these notes. I hope that he will share it with us soon. (are you there, Harold?) Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, Regarding Bill McNeaseâ??s suggestion to set the fest up as a non-profit, thereby making donations to it tax-deductible. That is not necessarily so. Most likely the fest would be deemed a fraternal/social organization, a 501c(4). Those are non-profit and tax-exempt organizations, but donations to them are NOT deductible. MOST coin clubs fall into this part of the IRS code. To have donations be deductible, it has to be a 501c(3), generally an educational organization. It is a lot harder to get a 501c(3) determination letter from the IRS than to get a 501c(4)letter. I did not receive Gram 884 Joe Dear Joe, So it looks like my suggestion of creating a religion will be the best way! OK, there are other possibilities. For sure (one way or another), money given for scholarships can be made into an educational donation. That can be done now by donating the money to the ANA instead of the in-house fund, but then the scholarships are not earmarked for the military numismatics seminar. I have talked Gail (Baker, ANA PIC (person in charge)) and Marcus on this and believe that after the two of them work together this summer that something can be worked out to help along this line. Editor Hey, Editor: I have just re'c'd the April BNR [this week] w/a few pics of you. You've gained weight. If it's from illness, I won't make fun of you; however, if it's from being contented and [very] well fed, I will refer to you for a while as 'Dear Well-Fed-itor.' Are you OK??? I am concerned 'cuz I care. As far as the 691/701 and any other controveries are concerned, don't let the bastards wear you down. You have plenty of support in the hinterlands...even if it is just Deep East Texas... Jay in Deep East Texas; i.e. Garrison, TX. P.S. While I've never met her, Judy must be a real princess... She puts up with you and the rest of us... Dear Jay, Thanks for writing, but do not worry. The picture was not me. I saw the same pictures and wondered how they could have possibly made that mistake of using the pictures of the old fat guy identifying him as me. Really quite embarrassing. Guess that I better do something about that (BNR using the wrong pictures). The Boss will be pleased to read your comments. Editor Dear Editor, I received one [gram] today at my AOL address, so it was not blocked, but maybe you sent it differently?? Don Dear Editor, Please send my GRAM to [alternate address]. I only receive one about every two weeks now thru AOL.
