From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 892 Date: Sunday, April 06, 2003 10:02 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 892 Saturday April 6, 2003 Turner, Fest Featured The headline and entire front page of the April 2003 Monthly Planchet, the newsletter of the Indianapolis Coin Club, feature a story on MPCFest IV in general and Marcus Turner winning the national collecting championship in particular! Turner is an active member of the ICC and the club is (obviously) proud of his achievement. The article does not contain much (if any) information that was not published earlier in the Gram, but it does do several useful things. First, it is great to get recogniation any and everywhere. Secondly, the article features a photograph of the championship medal. This unique version of the Fest medal has not prevously been illustrated in a numismatic publication. Readers can download a copy of the April newsletter by using the links below. http://www.indianapoliscoinclub.org/ http://www.indianapoliscoinclub.org/newsletter.htm More on Educational Status by Bill McNease Here is the scoop on a Non-Profit organization (excerpted) from IRS. Italics are my comments. "To be tax-exempt in accordance with IRC Section 501(c)(3), an organization must be organized and operated exclusively for one or more of the following: The one that applies to us -"educational" "The term charitable is used in its generally accepted legal sense and includes.....advancement of education. To be organized exclusively for a charitable purpose, the organization must be a corporation, community chest, fund or foundation.  Assets must be permanently dedicated to an exempt purpose. An organization that will be regarded as 'operated exclusively' for an exempt purpose only if it engages primarily in activities which accomplish an exempt purpose as specified in IRC 501 (c)(3).  No part of the net earnings of an organization may inure to the benefit or any private shareholder or individual." The information goes on to specifically limit political contributions. I really think that we can qualify as an educational organization.  Almost everything we do has to do with the furtherance of history of military money of some sort.  The ability to make the scholarships tax deductible, probably attendance at the FEST, the MPC database costs, mpcgram costs are just a few reasons to do this.  Heck, all the IRS can say is no.  And we have Fred and Joe that have published the guides that we use for the educational purposes. The complete text of what I excerpted is available on the IRS web site (www.irs.gov) as well as IRS Publication 557 that is a 60 page document that goes into the fine details.  More comments from anyone would be helpful. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== How wide can we make the circle? In this case I do not mean the circle of MPC collectors. In this case I mean circle of publicity creating itself. The story in the Monthly Planchet (see lead story) was based upon the Fest story that appeared in the Bank Note Reporter. Gail Phillips, editor of MP, asked for permission to make a story from the BNR story. Now we have made a story about Gail making a story. Likely, she can make a story about us making a story of her story made from our story and if she does, we might be able to make a story of that. Ok, more seriously, be sure to have a look at the MP. It is a very nice local newsletter. Furthermore, I belive that this April issue belongs in serious MPC literature collections! Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, Your e.mail I received from Joe Boling who has been kind enough to help me out with information on some notes I have.He suggested that I can get some information from you on notes and how to find some notes, mainly POW chits from the US and else where, from the WWII era. If possible,I would like to know how I can get some of them chits, and hope that this request does not cause any inconvenience. I thank you in adavnce, Neil K Dear Sir, Thank you for writing. Hopefully, someone will take the hint and list some chits here in the Gram for you. Edtior Dear Editor, I guess I was one of the lucky ones.  I have been out of town since March 26 and got home today, Apr. 3.  I had Grms 883-889 on my computer so upon reading Grm 888, I was only sick for about 15 minutes before reading Gram 889.  Nice April Fools joke.  It takes something like that for us to realize what we have, and what we would be missing, in these daily Grams.  Ron Waddell =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== May 30 ?
