From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 905 Date: Tuesday, April 22, 2003 5:55 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 905 Tuesday April 22, 2003 More on "ro" notes By Joe Boling A gram reader sent an inquiry about the ro notes that have been discussed in this space the past few weeks. His question points up the hazards of oldtimers using abbreviated descriptions of numismatic items--jargon, if you will. His email reads, in part: "The last few grams you talk about five yen ro notes. I am confused. I always thought that yen and ro(ryo) as I remember were two different kinds of money. Could you explain." Actually, yen and ryo, although called differently, are more closely related than many would suspect. When originally defined (late 1870 or early 1871), the gold yen was equivalent to the gold ryo; the name was changed to "yen" (or "en"), meaning "round," because of the change in the shape of gold coinage, from oval or rectangular to round. Which has nothing to do with ro notes. Those are a specialized issue of Japanese military yen, found on pages 593-4 of Schwan-Boling. In the Pick catalog, they are listed under French Indochina (with M numbers, for military). The other military yen notes are listed under China, also with M- prefixed catalog numbers. The term "ro" comes from the syllabary character used as a block prefix on the initial issues of this series (later printings dropped the "ro" character, but retained the distinctive backs, so the later printings are still easily separated from the other military yen notes--not to mention that the late "ro" series printings are lithographed, not engraved). The "ro" notes are the Japanese equivalent of MPC. They were issued only to the troops garrisoning Hainan Island and later Indochina, and they lack an exchange clause; the anti- counterfeiting clause is redesigned to fill the space that is shared by both exchange and anti- counterfeiting clauses on the other "bird and dragon" military yen issues. The distinction is that the other issues were used by civilians, in tremendous quantities; the "ro" issues were used only by limited numbers of troops, and had no exchange value. We actually have no evidence that civilians were prohibited from using "ro" notes, but lacking an exchange clause, they would have been less welcome. The notes with the ro character have always been very scarce to rare, until unc notes started trickling, then flowing, out of China. Formerly, the only frequently seen "ro" series note was the ten-yen brown and blue lithographed piece that lacks the "ro" character in front of the block number. There is a companion lithographed one-yen note for the "ro" series; it was apparently never released. I have never seen one "live." The 100-yen note in the series exists only as a lithographed specimen; there is no 100-yen note with the "ro" block prefix. And my source for new sightings says that he has seen two more 5-yen "ro" notes, so my cautions of last week are more strongly offered this week. And speaking of old-timers, I was reading back issues of The Numismatist this weekend, while traveling, and saw that Dr. Harry Watters was reported deceased in the October 2002 issue. He was stationed in Japan during the occupation and was a friend of Francis Sanders (of whom we have written previously). He had an extensive collection of Japanese coins and medals. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== The Internet goblins got us yesterday. All day long my computer would run, but when I got on the internet to work on the Gram, it crawled. I tried three different browsers in three different operating systems, of course rebooting for each combination. Usually drinking a cup of coffee and cursing for each combination as well. By late night, I was fried. Then I decided to read the directions so to speak and called the cable company. This was actually easier than I had anticipated. The technician checked my system remotely and gave it a go. Then he told me that the system was just out to get me. No, he did not say that. He reported that there was some sort of major slow down of everything from me to the Atlantic. He did sort of indicate that my house might be the farthest west to have this difficulty so maybe the system WAS out to get me! Doug Bell reports that he has cleaned, disinfected, washed, replaced, polished and otherwise adjusted, repaired, or replaced the server (whatever that is) so that we should get as good a transmission today as we will ever get. Therefore, hopefully, this Gram will get to some AOL customers who have been having problems. AOL users, please create a new address at hotmail or Yahoo (or other free service if you must) for purpose of receiving your Gram. Then send a subscribe notice to Doug@papermoneyworld.net. Grams will still be sent to your AOL address, but if you do not receive it via AOL, you can check your alternate address. In going through all of the above, I realized that there may not have been a Gram 903. It one was created and I can find it, I will salvage the editorial material. Otherwise, it just looks like you were cheated out of another Gram. Subscriptions will be extended TWO issues because of this oversight. Hopefully, this will satisfy everyone (but it will not). Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, It would help to place the address to send next FEST reservation money to, if the address was furnished. Also the cost for a single and a double. John Cheney Dear Gram, Put Joe Bissell and me down for Fest Five. I am going to make him go! Steve Swoosh Dear John and Steve, Great news. I believe that Fest registration is ahead of schedule. It is particularly gratifying to see so many new Festers so soon in the process. We have added some more details in the schedule below and of course there will be plenty more discussion in the coming weeks. Editor Hello Fred- Please explain to me in clear and precise detail how to continue getting the Gram on AOL. I am only getting about one a week. Thank you. J Dear J, Please see the editorial above?and please call AOL to complain. Editor =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== May 30 ?
