From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 914 Date: Wednesday, May 07, 2003 11:12 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 914 Wednesday May 7, 2003 Major Collection to the Block A major collection of military money will be sold by Lyn Knight auctions. Although the collector is well known to old timers, he has asked to remain anonymous. The collection is extensive in scope and depth. It includes military payment certificates, Allied military currency, and many other issues. Allied military yen was of particular interest to the collector because he used it in Okinawa (a clue to his identity) and the collection includes rare 1000 AM yen notes. Knight has indicated that the collection will appear (in whole or part) in the August sale in Dallas. Details will of course be published in the Gram as they become available. PMW Data Base Aids Investigation By Doug Bell I have conferred with a detective on the value of having serial numbers in a database like the one at papermoneyworld.net these are his comments. Having a list of your serial numbers of all items that may be subject to being stolen is very important. I asked what can be done to improve the information in that database for the user if a theft does accrue. He suggest to have your list printed and notarized. I then questioned him on the verification of the data in the database indicating that any electronic data can be changed. His comment is that I as the operator of the database could provide a notary service to users for the information in the database where I could print out there list and verify the data. We have implemented a function at papermoneyworld.net that now allows you to download a list of your notes to a spread sheet for your personal use. I am also considering archiving the database periodically as a means of establishing when material is entered. This may not be as good as a notarized list, but it might also take care of the entire community at one time! The data base was important in identifying and recovering material stolen from David Seelye and Fred Schwan. This proves the importance of this approach for law enforcement which is a great bonus because the information is also available for research and other purposes! I would like your comments on the above. doug@papermoneyworld.net =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== We are excited to be the first publication to report the forthcoming sale of a major collection of military notes. (I have also started saving money!!) Of course it is also sad to lose a collector from the active ranks. Such is the nature of collecting. This gets back to the issue discussed a few weeks ago about the best disposition of a collection: sale to collectors or turning over to a museum. I look forward to the entire process ahead of us. Receiving and studying the catalog, attending the auction (and bidding), and finally receiving new prizes?every step of the process is exciting. Most of those steps also will find their way into the Gram. Of course you can count on me to make my comments, but yours are equally welcome and probably more interesting! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, Guy's letter does not sound like one written by a collector. Rather it sounds more like it was written by an investor who is solely interested in profit!!!! I applaud you, Fred, as I am sure all other TRUE collectors do. Let the investors be damned! Collectors first. Investors last. Ken Dear Ken, Thanks for the support. Sometimes I worry about that target painted on my back (not really). I can attest to Guy?s credentials as a collector. Investor? That too. Frankly I like criticism for the Gram and therefore must be ready to accept it about myself. I even like that. What I do not like is mean spirited criticism (of anyone), but I must admit that defining the mean spirited comment is not easy. Editor Dear Esteeemed Editor, You know how bad I am at remembering names, so I am not sure if I know this Guy fellow or not, but I am not sure if I do want to know him. His foaming at the mouth about you, or anyone else, working to not have MPC destroyed is way off base in the MPC Gram. Collecting anything is something a person does because they enjoy doing it and appreciate their beauty, history, topics, colors, etc., etc. Most collectors want the objects of their searches to not grow too much in value because it puts one or more of their pieces out of reach to their incomes. I do not know a true collector who wants to see any of his collectibles destroyed, and all of them I know would love to see more people join them and share the wealth of owning, researching and writing about them. But if they do grow in value and you can sell them for more than you paid for them, that is good, but it is not the goal of a "collector." Dealers deal in collectibles to make money, but they are often into them because they also enjoy them. Dealers buy a certain number of collectibles and stock enough of them to take care of their customers. They regularly buy at a percentage below the market price and sell at the market price or more to make a living. This regular buying allows them to avoid most great shocks in pricing. So if they stock more than they need for a particular market cycle, their inventory could be worth less than they paid for it. Investors may have some of the above qualities, but they are really a different person than a collector or dealer because they are really, really into them only to make money. But in investing, there is something called risk. The risk means that your investment can also kill you if you go overboard in accumulating something that could go down in value and/or demand. Like when a company decides to issue more stock and dilutes the value of the stock already in the stockholders' hands. Guy has described himself as a collector and dealer. He might have been a collector once in his life, but if he subscribes to the fact that he wants to see his collectible destroyed because there will be too many of them and their value will go down, he is no longer a collector. He might be a dealer because he is concerned about the value, but if his collectible is destroyed, his future stock will not be restockable and he cannot sell more to his customers at his markup and make a living. So I am thinking he is really just an investor, and when an investor loses, their first inclination is to blame someone else for screwing up their investment, and they have completely forgotten to make a killing, there is always a risk of losing. I think the MPC Gram is a newsletter which supports the activities of collectors and dealers. If it is an investment newsletter, you had better register it with the SEC because if not, a G-man of some kind will be knocking on your door. I would like to request that the editor establish another editorial policy, and that policy is not to publish anything from anyone who has anything to do with investing because I receive my investment information from CNBC, Barron's and a couple of other source. Sincerely, Howard A. Daniel III Deer Howard, G-man?! I love it! Gram-man!! I do not know how I did not think of that! Yes, I suppose that we might list a daily disclaimer like: mention of specific numismatic items in the Gram is not an endorsement to buy or sell. Investments go up and down and past performance is not an indicator of future appreciation. Steamed editor Dear Editor! I like the new "Poll" ideas (Gram 913)! Also my #691 $1 is "Red Cross" stamped. (survey info) well till next time. Best regards Guy! Dear Editor, This [story about your editors run in (twice) with a back hoe] will teach you to go out and get yourself a surge suppressor/battery backup/power supply! They are only about $40 (sometimes less after rebates) and are available at any office supply store or computer store. Save yourself some headaches. - Gail (ICC editor) =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== May 17, miniFest in lower Alabama hosted by Harold Kroll. It is a long sheet of paper with mimeographed information about each day?s tour to sites/locations not far from Tokyo. The April 1 date is a ?Silk Mill Tour? and there are another two long sheets of mimeographed paper with a colored in Red Cross describing it. And I have the Katakura & Company Limited 32-pages booklet handed out to each person on the tour of the silk mill. The booklet is interesting in that it is dated 1937 and done on high grade paper with a tied cover, and not postwar. The reason I bought this group is because of the ?Bankers? Club? on the ARC pages. But it might also be connected to chits and/or coupons at that club and this material could be added to a collection and possibly used in an exhibit. The junk store I bought it appears to have pamphlets for all of the other tour dates, if someone is interested in them. I want $5.50 postpaid for the three above items.
