From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 918 Date: Wednesday, May 14, 2003 10:00 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 918 Wednesday May 14, 2003 West (Mini) Fest I By Al Glaser I was disappointed to learn that the mini Fest planned for the 17th in Alabama was in conflict with another event I had already scheduled. My semi-annual miniature golf tournament in Laughlin, Nevada. I called Harold begging to have the date moved, he said no. I asked if I could send an old yearbook picture along with my paybook in order to qualify as a Fester in attendance, he said no. I continued with my plea, mentioning to Harold how I thought this was a great idea. He wouldn't have to make hotel reservations (first floor no smoking) always tough, doesn't have to worry how I was going to get to and from the airport, doesn't have to order in additional food, I wouldn't be keeping anybody up all night talking MPC, but...he said no. So, if there is a call for pay, I ask one of the participants to take charge of MFC record keeping of serial numbers, replacements, errors, total issued, etc. In the future, I hope we can make every attempt to schedule these events with more lead time. For instance, does anyone have an interest in having a mini West-Fest at Long Beach in I think October? [I think that I found the dates as 19-21 Sep, if that is right and you have West Fest I, get the word out as soon as possible so that we can get it in the Gram and possibly make some travel plans-Ed] =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I have enjoyed the discussion about the terminology for the names of the sides of bank notes so I decided to write about another problem word (my opinion) and have altered my own opinion already. The word is currency. I have studied this word rather extensively. The most widely accepted definitions including several unabridged dictionaries and Black Legal Dictionary define the numismatic aspects of the word to mean then circulating money—paper money AND coins. That definition makes a name like Fred’s Coin and Currency Shop redundant at best, stupid at worst. Fred’s Currency Shop certainly would not mean a numismatic boutique where a person could find paper money to the exclusion of coins. However, because the definition does include paper money, there are places where it could be used to good effect. When discussing the paper one which Federal Reserve notes are printed, it would be awkward to insist on paper money paper rather than currency paper. It would also be unambiguous because there is no such thing as coin paper. I know that this is an inflammatory position because many people and organizations have used the word currency to mean paper money. Because of the possible high emotions on this issue (as opposed to face/back), I decided to check at least a little more. On the internet, the dictionary definitions that I found were incomplete—even those claming to be unabridged. In the never ending pursuit of knowledge and flaunting the Gram expense account, I subscribed to the Merridian-Webster on-line unabridged dictionary. There for the first time I found a definition that supports the currency as paper money definition. I include it below: 2 a :something that is in circulation as a medium of exchange including coin, government notes, and bank notes b:paper money in circulation For an old fuddy duddy like me, it is tempting to dismiss this definition as uniformed and/or a dumbing down of the language, but I will resist. Based upon this one source alone, I conclude that it is not incorrect to use the word currency to mean paper money, but I also submit that it is still best to avoid such use. I expect and certainly look forward to your comments on this. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, I enjoyed the discussion of marginalization. I hadn't thought of it in academic terms before. I have always written in text books, etc. I certainly write in SB and MPC4. But I had not codified the process. In fact, when you announce you were working on a new SB, one of my thoughts was of how to transfer my notes! Warner Dear Editor, I looked at the design for the new $20 (Series2004) Federal Reserve note today. I like it, but I must say that my biggest reaction is that it looks like Fest money. More specifically, I think that Bureau people adopted some of the MFC design elements for the new federal money! C. Tolek Dear Editor, You will notice that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing has a photo to look at the new $20.00 color design. They say "Click here to see note front" etc. Interesting! http://www.moneyfactory.com/newmoney/ Don Dear Don (and C) Thanks for pointing out the new design for the $20 FRN. You guys are much smarter than I am! (I can almost hear the world-wide applause on that one.) Yesterday I tried to figure out a way to bring the new design into the realm of military money for inclusion in the Gram. I could not do it, but you came up with TWO connections! Yes, I have to admit that even the BEP is not consistent on the matter of terminology. The biggest problem is that too often these news releases are written by public relations people who are interested in things like not using the word face twice (or more) in the same paragraph/document. At least they did not call it the obverse! Editor Dear Editor, Would marginalia include marmalade stains in my copy of WW II Remembered? Cheers, Colin Dear Colin, Well, I am not sure. If I drop my toast on my Remembered did I margerinalize it? Editor, In regards to the recent poll on what to call the sides of papermoney, I think there was 1 term not applied to the poll or discussion. These terms are widely used in coins. I think all of us have used these terms at one time or another. These terms are used at sport games, bars, back allies: heads and tails! Obverse.....Reverse should not be used. Collecting paper money to me has always been a different category and as such dose not have to adopt terms used by the coin industry. Paper money is different. Therefore terms used to describe paper money are also different. An example would be "in grading a coin, the coin has a margin tear" obviously this does not fit and neither does using terms based on coins for papermoney. Wiz Dear Editor, There is a reason that paper money is referred to as Obverse/ Reverse. Yes, it is because coins were called as such, with the die standard. Also, as you stated, paper money, including up to date, is referred in the SAME manner. Your fact that in paper money, the plates are referred to as "face"and "back" is correct for U.S. currency, but the FACT remains, paper money has been called in the same fashion as coins for over 100 years now. If you feel that a change in terminology is in order, then make a recommendation to the various numismatic agencies that have abided by this terminology for these past 100 yrs. Gee, you try to change everything, ABOUT FACE! Sincerely, Steve S. Dear Steve, Thank you very much for writing. I really mean it. You are the first person I have ever heard who defends using obverse/reverse. However, I believe that there are two serious flaws in your argument. First, we certainly do not want to do something just because we have always done it that way. Secondly, and more importantly, you are just mistaken about how it has been done. You were just a coin guy toooooooooo looooooooong! The fact of the matter is that among numismatists who have considered the matter, the overwhelming choice is face/back (with front/back acceptable second). The following publications/agencies have explicitly accepted face/back as the preferred/correct terms: Bank Note Reporter Numismatic News Coin World Paper Money The Numismatitst International Bank Note Society Journal MPC Gram (grin) BNR Press Yes, occasionally, in one of these publications you can find bad terminology sneak in. That happens most often when they take on a new staff member who was exclusively a coin person or was not a numismatist at all and had just learned obverse/reverse vice coins. The other common example is in advertising. Basically, these publications do not change this terminology in an advertisement. Thanks again for being a target (you KNOW that I know THAT feeling). The April 1 date is a “Silk Mill Tour” and there are another two long sheets of mimeographed paper with a colored in Red Cross describing it. And I have the Katakura & Company Limited 32-pages booklet handed out to each person on the tour of the silk mill. The booklet is interesting in that it is dated 1937 and done on high grade paper with a tied cover, and not postwar. The reason I bought this group is because of the “Bankers’ Club” on the ARC pages. But it might also be connected to chits and/or coupons at that club and this material could be added to a collection and possibly used in an exhibit. The junk store I bought it appears to have pamphlets for all of the other tour dates, if someone is interested in them. I want $5.50 postpaid for the three above items.
