From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 919 Date: Saturday, May 17, 2003 8:54 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 919 Saturday May 17, 2003 MINI-FEST UPDATE Harold Kroll As I'm finishing up all those little things to get ready for the mini-fest tomorrow, my thoughts have been on the comments that Al Glaser made about the date set being short was something that just worked out that way. Will try to do better next time. His question about sending his paybook with a picture to get paid is out the question. If picture is included, NO WAY AL. After considering the short notice making it impossible for some to attend we are going to make this offer as follows. A total of twelve sets were made for this event. The notes used for the event are the 681 series reprints put out by Carlson Chambliss, all military theme. The face of the notes have a 3 cent Ruptured Duck stamp affixed with Wilmer, Alabama postmark and 5-17-2003 date stamp. They are also stamped MINI-FEST, Wilmer, Alabama. The backs of the notes have the set number stamped on them. One set is being set back for the Fest Auction next year, five have committed to attendees leaving six sets available to other festers. The following sets are available, 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Here is the deal. The first six e-mails (Harbons@aol.com) requesting a set will reserve a one (set). Requests for specific numbers will be honored subject to availability. You will receive your set for a donation of $50.00 to the Military Money Scholarship Fund along with your paybook will get you one of the remaining sets. Last Chance Today is the last opportunity to vote in the weekly poll at papermoneyworld.net. This week?s question focuses on the on going discussion on collecting and investing. Go to http://www.papermoneyworld.net and place your vote. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== The Alabama Mini Fest is underway as I write this. Indeed, the Boss is on the phone to Alabama as I type this. The group is having a great time down there. I suspect that some notes are trading hands. Possibly at the speed of light! After I finished with the duel with the back hoe, I had other computer problems which interfered with the Gram yesterday. It was nothing serious, but it was a pain. Now that I have the computer and internet cooperating, I cannot remember all of the things that I wanted to write about. Oh well. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Editor, As long as I have been collecting it has always been Currency is paper money and Specie refers to coins. Barnacle Bill Hi Fred, Just for the record... I have these 2 notes, could they be the highest serial numbers reported ? 591 .25c G03748163G 641 1.00 J33034998J Please let me know, Thanks Gary Hansen Hello Grammies! I like "Doug's web page!" which I can pull up on Netscape Navigator 4.7, but it won't let me access it to vote or enter in to the data base. Wondering if these "Poll" questions could be posted briefly in the gram? And perhaps I could (others too?) e-mail there votes on such weekly questions directly to the gram in such cases! Also even if not, perhaps post the poll questions and results weekly in the Gram? Just a thought! P.S. I am not very adept on the "pc" actually I can barely e-mail! (you would think my children would come over and help me.....not, too busy!!!! need lessons, Guy! Hello! I finally figured out how to access the "MPC site" by using "Internet Explorer!" WHICH I already have on my "desktop" SO please disregard the previous e-mail on this subject. (you don't need to run these letter's') Got some "tech" support. Thanks so much for your help "Doug," Thanks again ... Guy! Dear Gram, Well, I looked at the new $20 images, and I don't see any place where see-through registration will be used. I had read that we were FINALLY going to get that almost-universally-used anti- counterfeiting device on the new tinted currency, but it looks like we have missed the boat again. When is the stodgy BEP going to catch up with the rest of the world? Joe Dear Editor, Just another thought about terminology. Even though I agree 100% with, face - back. Mainly out of full respect for the engravers. I find their "craft" amazing!! I think it should be mentioned that the majority of notes, (MPC) are fractional. Especially with the 20 dollar, being introduced only in the last five series. I guess what I'm getting at is, there are times when talking about a "25 cent note", I find myself slipping over into the "round" realm. Maybe I need help here, and at risk of embarrassment... Is a "25 cent note" ...a quarter of a dollar??..Or "A Quarter" .??.. Or "1/4" .??..Or "One Fourth".?? Or maybe it's always a "25 cent note" Respect, Ed =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== May 30 ? It is a long sheet of paper with mimeographed information about each day?s tour to sites/locations not far from Tokyo. The April 1 date is a ?Silk Mill Tour? and there are another two long sheets of mimeographed paper with a colored in Red Cross describing it. And I have the Katakura & Company Limited 32-pages booklet handed out to each person on the tour of the silk mill. The booklet is interesting in that it is dated 1937 and done on high grade paper with a tied cover, and not postwar. The reason I bought this group is because of the ?Bankers? Club? on the ARC pages. But it might also be connected to chits and/or coupons at that club and this material could be added to a collection and possibly used in an exhibit. The junk store I bought it appears to have pamphlets for all of the other tour dates, if someone is interested in them. I want $5.50 postpaid for the three above items.
