Fred told us his horror story about trying to buy bonds from a local branch. Let me tell you about banks with no money. My branch recently underwent remodeling. When the work was done, the tellers' counter was gone. Now they have five islands curved around the lobby. At each island a teller takes deposits and handles transfers, but there is no cash drawer. All money is dispensed by an ATM-like machine in the island, bills being dropped into a pick-up basket and coins being dispensed into a cup like the ones that supermarkets have used for some time. If a customer makes a cash deposit, all the cash is placed in an envelope (which is first imprinted with a transaction identifier and the amount of cash contained), the envelope is sealed (they use self-stick #6 3/4 envelopes), and the envelope is dropped into a slot in the top of the island. At the end of the day, the armored courier company comes and empties all the islands (and presumably reloads the cash dispenser), takes all those envelopes back to its counting house, and reconciles each teller's balance from there. The tellers don't count out in the evening, because they have nothing to count. When I brought in all that cash from the PNNA convention (subject of a column last month), about 300 notes, the teller had to make up over a dozen envelopes to hold it all, and it all went through that 3/4 inch slot in the top of the island. Even though they have two other islands for "business deposits" such as that one, they would rather make a dozen envelopes than move to an island for bulk transactions. I wonder how many trees those envelopes will cost over a year? What does this mean for me, someone who has been hounding tellers for specific notes for my collection? It means there is no longer a source. Even if a customer brought in some older currency that a teller knew I was looking for, there would be no way to set it aside unless I happened to be standing next in line and the teller told the customer to go sell it to me instead of depositing it. As soon as a teller takes the money, it has to go into that black hole and the Fed (or an insider at the armored courier company) will end up with any old notes that we would like to have stay in collectors hands. Banking without cash. Grump. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Yesterday I told you about how I obtained my newest prize. What I did not tell you was, what that prize is. It is an end label for Allied military 5 franc notes! As far as I can remember, this is the first AMC end label that I have seen. The label is full of interesting information like the packaging date (in pencil) 2/17 1944. Here is an interesting question. It was package 1524 packed in case 775 in the serial number range 12184001 – 12192000. Just about the first thing that I did was go through all of the AM 5 franc notes that I could find looking for one that fit in that range. No luck, but those numbers will be with me for the rest of my collecting career. I hope that you will help me find a 5 franc note in that range! Please find one (some)!! Heck, the very first line is interesting. INVASION CURRENCY. I am not sure that I have seen that terminology on any Bureau or Forbes documents. That sounds like common use terminology instead of official terminology making it onto an end label. Can you tell that I am pleased? Here is a link to have a look. I have a few more comments for next time after you have had a chance to look. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/900-999/images/lable.jpg =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, I am sure that this is a little late but to the guys that are discussing the proper way to call a note I have this to offer! I have just purchased a huge collection of items from the archives of several bank note companies that were affiliated with American Bank Note Co. and its security Printing arms that did work for several Governments around the world including the USA. On all of these documents and proof sheets dating from the 1860s to the 1980s it states and refers to the notes as FACE and BACK so as far as the professionals go that make these notes every one of them on the specimen sheets and the proof sheets hand pulled from the presses state in hand writing several characteristics; Dies-Ink colors-Engravers-and how many plates all refer to them as being FACE and BACK not one out of hundreds spanning over 120 some years refers to it as anything else. One of them even explains why it is called the face stating in engravers Smillies hand writing that it is and has the face of a subject (human) on it! Referring to face plate as a explanation to whom he was corresponding with over this particular proof sheet of notes! This is really neat stuff that I have acquired and I will be selling some of it to some lucky individuals if that is you? call or email me we can talk about some of these items and most are one of a kind items like original Master dies that were used in several Bank notes and stamps These are engraved pieces of art (in printing plate form) by some of the most famous artists that our hobby had to offer! These are real special items and I am selling them at reasonable prices so if you are interested let me know? I hope this brings some light to your discussion Kevin 248-830-6390 call anytime!
