From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 930 Date: Thursday, June 05, 2003 6:54 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 930 Thursday June 5, 2003 Fathers Day and Cool Stuff New MPC souvenir and household products are now available from papermoneyworld.net according to web master Doug (Wiz) Bell. The products, coffee mugs, mouse pads and other items, feature images of MPC or MPC personalities. http://www.cafeshops.com/papermoneyworld The MPC products were quietly introduced in a test marketing done on ebay last week. In that test a mug was offered with the following description: If you collect MPC, you probably know Harold Kroll (aka HARBONS). This coffee cup features a sketch made of the ol coffee drinker himself. This cup is ideal for planting marijuana, throwing at unruly kids, gifting to an inlaw, smashing in a fight with an angry spouse, or even drinking coffee. If you take this cup with you to MPCFest V, you will be treated to free coffee every morning at breakfast. 25% of the profits (if any) of sales of this cup will go to the military money scholarship fund. Any other profits go to support the community web site papermoneyworld.net. In keeping with the Kroll cup above a special Kroll Barbeque apron is on sale now at the site for fathers day. You could grill those burgers and sip your coffee (or other beverage) all while wearing Kroll attire (watch out Michael Jordan. If Kroll items are sold out, you can try some other great designs of the same products. Orders entered promptly might be delivered in time for fathers day (product delivery is tied to Gram delivery schedules?it is a joke, ok?!). As stated in the listing, a portion of the profits for the sale of every item will go to the scholarship fund and the balance will go to maintaining and expanding the papermoneyworld.net web site for the good of all collectors. Long Beach...My Story By Ed Beaman Thursday, the first day the show opened to the public, we arrived at the 10:00 opening. My fellow work associate, Paul, was in for a treat, as this was his first time to the show. Paul collects "the round stuff," die varieties of Carson City, Morgans "78." I have been working on him, but I have a ways to go. He is a bit stubborn on changing his interests. I think it's the amount of money he has tied up in these hard, round, metallic objects....I just don't get it ; -) My first stop was at the highly touted, "Siam Dollar," display complete with an armed guard. I spotted David Seelye, re-introduced myself, we talked for awhile....I don't think he had his MPC coin with him, at least I didn't see it. Of course it could have been buried in with his stuff. I then began my serious search for military money. Equipped with Doug's want list, MPC #4 (working copy), S/B, mag glass, loupe, a bundle of note holders (there never seems to be enough of these..?), and a few choice notes that I would use to sweeten a deal. It may be my imagination, but the amount of MPC seems to be dwindling. I think more people are collecting our notes. I want to tell you about the box, you know, "The Box". You have all seen it. It sits on top of the display case, sometimes it is kept back behind the sellers table. Usually it has the items not fit for the display, or not of a focus for this seller, maybe simply overflow. The box has been searched a few hundred times, and carried from show to show. Items leave the box and the seller, through dealings, replenishes the box. In some boxes, items are marked individually. Some others are marked a clean-up price, as in $3.00 or $4.00 each. In such a box I found a "Radar" note, not only a radar but also a "Flipper" (thanks Doug). No it's not a pack fresh gem, but more valuable, knowing the hundreds of eyes that have gone right past it, being discounted as just another, 641 fine. I guess the satisfaction is in being rewarded, after dozens of boxes, searching through hundreds of notes. I paid two dollars. http://home.sprynet.com/~ebeaman/641Rada1.JPG I was also rewarded in meeting, Guy Araby. Very high level of collecting enthusiasm. Guy was quick to show his "Babies". There is no wonder he calls them babies, they are absolutely "Brand New". I think my jaw is still lying there on the bourse floor. It made me nervous to even handle 'em..."WoW". Well for me and my pocket book, I will be forced and lucky, to catch the discards of these high level collectors. Any day spent with your passion, fuels the fire of the never ending search. The next find for my collection. BTW...Fred, No 5 Franc "Label Notes" Found... Neil, No 1 Mark "Label Notes" Found... =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== This terminology discussion may have gone to far! Ed Beaman sent a scan of his radar (above) to Doug Bell who sent it to me. That generated a discussion between him and me. One of us said that Ed had cherrypicked this note. The other thought that it was not cherrypicking because the dealer had put the item in his junk box. I thought (think) that cherrypicking is one of the oldest and most popular numismatic sports, but several years ago I had a conversation with legendary numismatist Eric Newman about this topic. He stated that he did not like the term because it implied a winner and a loser. Indeed, it implied that the winner had sort of cheated the loser. I guess that the moral of the story for me is that no matter how safe a subject may seem, there are multiple opinions. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, I saw these replacements at Long Beach 692 5 cent E00668506 pos 84 UNC pin holes 461 5 cent A00584578 pos 74 F-VF 641 $10.00 J00032672 pos 5 VF-EF ph 541 5 cent F01441384 pos 13 F-VF 541 10 cent F00786717 pos 15 VF David Dear David, Thanks for the report. I know that you did not intend this to be a letter to the editor, but I can never resist a plug. We always want MPC replacement reports. Every single report is important as we march toward 3000 replacements! Your report is a perfect model including all of the important data. Editor Dear Editor, The least that you could have done was to spell bogus correctly [in the title of the Boling column Tue]. Joe Dear Editor, Hi! WHERE"s the gram?? Too much is happening! Need our Gram!!! Guy! Dear Editor (via telephone), Have I been bad? I have not received a Gram! [since Tue]. Name withheld [but mail box filled with 12 copies of all previous Grams] Greetings Marcus, Today, June 3 is the 38th anniversary of Ed White's First American spacewalk. It occurred during the third orbit of the four-day Gemini IV mission. He was outside the capsule (built by McDonnell, here in St. Louis) for 22 minutes. His spacewalk is commemorated on the back of series 681 fractionals! Mark Hartford Dear Mark, Drat, we are a day late in commemorating the event. Guess that opens the door for you to write a big story on the event for Gram 1232 on June 3, 2004. Editor Dear Esteeemed Editor, I think the Yahoo calendar is GREAT but I will want the clickable blue line to access it in every Gram. When will you be ready to receive updates to the calendar? Speaking of calendars. I just received confirmation of the club table I man for NI, NBS and IBNS at the ANA Convention in Baltimore. And the IBNS meeting on Saturday, August 2 at 11AM in Room 317, and the NI meeting follows it in the same room at Noon. All Gramsters are welcome at the table and the meetings. Well, at least those on my A-list are welcome. This year's theme is about the Philippines, and there is a Philippine Collectors Forum on Friday, August 1, where collectors, researchers, dealers, catalogers, etc. are meeting and discussing the issues of this country. I want every Gramster attending this convention to bring everything, to include a list of references and articles in their library, related to the Philippines so the catalogs and bibliographies can be updated with their "new" stuff. Howard A. Daniel III Dear Howard, I am very pleased that you like the Yahoo/MPCGram calendar. The times that you gave in your letter are now included in the calendar. The ability to list detailed times is one of the strengths of the system. If you can get the rest of the times we can put them in too. Indeed, there is a way that we can make you (or you and John Wilson or whomever) an editor of the calendar so that you can go in and edit it without going through headquarters. A very interesting capability is the ability to merge calendars. If you create a personal calendar at Yahoo, Dear Steamed Freditor, Regarding bogus notes, I have a Italian AMC for 25 lire! Square, same size and face design as the 1-2-5-10. Ever see one? Rather attractive, really- printed in a lavender color. The set as I obtained it includes 1-5-10-25 lire in small size (no 2 lire), all dated Series 1943- also a 50 and 100 dated Series of 1943 A. I am not sure why this set was made; possibly it was for movie use. The back design for all is completely different from originals. Dear Editor, I wonder if you could sneak in a little blurb about the Philippine Collectors Forum that Ray Czahor is putting together on Friday Aug.1 at 1 P.M. in Room 317 of the convention center in Baltimore at the ANA convention? I know many MPC collectors cross over into this" the best of worlds!" Thanks, Jack Glass Dear Jack, Yes, of course, we need and WANT listings. Best of all this listing is now on the Yahoo/Gram calendar.
