From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 931 Date: Friday, June 06, 2003 9:15 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 931 Friday June 6, 2003 D-Day wrappers By Neil Shafer I mentioned a few days ago that I had some wrappers from Allied military currency. The group came from the Jim Wade Collection along with some great MPC in 1968. (Those notes included the uncirculated $5.00 471 that eventually went to Amon Carter.) There are 5 French wrappers, 4 of which have text in English and French about replacement notes with letter X. Of course these were issued 59 years ago today. The colors are red-brown, green, red-orange and blue. The single wrapper without any text is printed in brown. The 4 with text have word FRANCS at top, bottom and on back, and number 100 at center. The brown one (without the text) has FRANC (no S) and 100 placed as the others. That's all I can tell you about these. There are also four wrappers for Italian lire- colors of the printed word LIRE at top, bottom and at top on the back are green, blue, purple and black. The number 100 is also printed on each of these in the same color, at center. Only the one printed in blue has a different format, also with the following text: "NOTICE Numbers on notes in this package do not run in sequence. The........substituted notes have numbers preceded or followed by a star." The number 100 is crossed out at center and has a penciled 94/60/30 (the first 2 are crossed out), and also a red 2 on top of the printed text quoted above. Does this mean there were 2 star notes in this package? Date on this wrapper is 7-25-43. Others are dated 8-7-43, 10-12-43 and 12-10-43, all in pencil. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Today is one of those historic days that will always be of interest to Gramsters. On this day tens of thousands of Allied troops stormed ashore at Normandy, France (1944). Also on this day Judy Schwan retired (2003). Both of these events are extremely important to Gramsters. Some (Gramsters) more than others! You will recall that a few weeks ago I bragged about obtaining an end label for 5 Allied military franc notes. Within a few hours of sending out that Gram, I realized that I should have held that story for D-Day. Fortunately, Neil bailed me out with a good story! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Mr. Editor, When I opened my e-mail at the office this morning I found a message from one of the candidates running for office in the upcoming ANA elections. This message was primarily a reminder that ballots should be out us sometime this week, and that we should consider casting a vote for this individual. His message made me think a little. Who are these people? What are their agendas/goals/strategic plans? Hmm… I referenced the May edition of the Numismatist. Took keep this concise and to the point I will only pick on the Presidential candidates. Besides, they had the biggest ads and will need the most practice shutting up opinionated jerks such as myself. Both ads spent most of their space discussing achievements, experience and establishing some level of integrity and leadership abilities. Well DUH! My underlying assumption is that these qualities would be essential to even be considered as a legitimate candidate. So where are these guys agendas? Gary Lewis’ ad dedicated a 2”x2.5” column (out of an entire page) outlining his objectives. Patti Finner’s ad gives us a two sentence statement about wanting to increase membership through better benefits. That’s it! Ballots are to be out this week. So far I have read nothing that motivates me spend the 37 cents to mail the ballot back in. I challenge any candidate for any ANA office (I will exclude John Wilson from this as he has kept us well informed of his bid for governor) to convince me to vote. I want to see something of a strategic plan. I want to know what the agendas are. I want to know how us papermoney collectors fit into the picture and what we can do to assist. Will any of the candidates be in Memphis? I hope so, as it is only the largest papermoney show in the US! We Gramsters might be a vague and eccentric subset of mainstream numismatics, but the last I checked the MPCGram had 400+ subscribers; not too shabby! Marcus Turner Early response to Marcus from Gary Lewis, ANA vice president Dear Marcus, I would like to take this opportunity to give you some personal information about me since I am a candidate for ANA President. I have been collecting MPC since 1969 when I was the Accounting and Finance Officer at Takhli RTAFB Thailand. I collected fairly heavy in this area at my follow up assignment at the USAF Academy . In addition, I have exhibited MPC at several ANA and FUN conventions. My collection is not complete but it consists of about 100 plus pieces. As a side note I have written one or two short items in the Gram and have been subscribing to it since it first came out. I have known Fred Schwan "Mr. MPC" for about 30 years and am a prior Secretary of SPMC. I went to the first few Memphis shows back in the late 70's and was planning to go this year but I started a new accounting project today that it going to take me some time so I do not think I will make it. Marcus, please look me up in Baltimore. If I can answer any additional questions please let me know. Gary Dear Editor, Just a reminder. The Memphis Paper Money Show!! There will be a meeting of the M2C2 at 4:00 on Saturday afternoon in Ballrooms 3,4. It is requested that all FEST IV personnel that are at the show be present at this meeting. Those who do not show, may be disappointed!! Marv Dear Marv, Thanks for the tip. Everyone with a paybook should take them to Memphis.
