Daniel III Awhile back I wrote about reading the Obituaries in The Washington Post and finding those who passed on who might have left some information and/or numismatic/exonumia pieces in their records. One of them was a Colonel Jackson, who I think was heavily involved in the 1, 2 and 5 Dong leaflets dropped over North Viet Nam. I waited a couple of months and wrote a letter to his widow, but I have not yet received a response. Maybe I cannot write the “right” letter, so I am telling you about another man who has passed on. Today’s [ca May 28] paper has a Colonel Joseph Lee Mastran passing on at the age of 87. During his service, his obituary has him being the commander of a WWII POW Camp for Germans. It is very possible he has left some papers and other material related to chits or scrip used in his camp. If you want to write to his widow and ask about them, you can write to her, Mrs. Mary Pauline Mastran, 4019 Pine Brook Road, Alexandria, VA 22310. I have written in my letters that historically important material could be in his papers. Instead of possible losing or trashing them, I suggest that they be donated to the Army War College or another similar repository, if they do not want to sell them. Maybe there should be a form letter that has been carefully edited by Gramsters that can be addressed to the survivors. Who wants to jump in and write this letter as we discover families who might have materials important to our research? You stated "Basically we run all material that is submitted to the Gram . . ." I must disagree. Two years ago I sent you two articles on Philippine Guerrilla currency & you never published them! I asked you numerous times about them & you told me they would be published. I eventually got "fed up") or should I say "fred up") and sent them to Ray Czahor & he published them on his site. (Have you ever wondered why more people don't write for the Gram? Maybe now you know.) Also, twice I sent a letter to the GRAM asking for help from Gramsters on the following question, "Why are MPC the size they are? What was the logic behind choosing the size?" I do remember the Philippine articles and certainly did want to publish them (and still do for that matter). Basically just goofed that up. I do not specifically recall the MPC size questions. Thank you for calling me on this. The criticism is valid, but the Gram policy is as stated. The problem is our flaky editor. I am pleased that you have continued to read the Gram in spite of my dreadful service. Editor Dear Editor-- Perhaps this is old news, but I recently purchased a German 1000 RM Steuergutschein note which is unlisted in the present edition of "WW2R" The note is identical design-wise to the lower denominations but is done in a brown-blue-brown undertint. I also have a lead on the elusive later issue...but that's a tale for later! WW Dear W, Good find! Please take it to Memphis with you! We have lots to learn about these Steuergutschein. I hope the latter issue that you mention is Steuergutschein II. Would like to see some of those! Editor Dear Editor, My thanks to Niel.
