From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 936 Date: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 8:31 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 936 Wednesday June 12, 2003 Winterhilfswerk Varieties By Wendell Wolka When News breaks out, we break in! While pondering the abject beauty of a pile of 1943/1944 Winterhilfswerk 1 RM notes, I have discovered a variety heretofore unreported! Block Z2 notes (previously unreported, or at least unpublished, block) sport what appears to be a damaged "1." The lower left serif of the numeral has a white "blob" which breaks the inner line of the figure and obliterates one of the heart-shaped border design elements on the "1." Other blocks (R, J, J3 -- all heretofore unpublished blocks) exhibit a normal "1" with all design elements intact. If one takes the leap of faith that Z2 block notes were probably nearly the last notes produced, late in the war, then perhaps we have a lithograph stone problem which was deemed not worth fixing. I have enclosed a scan for your amazement...including "handcrafted" pointers indicating the area of the variety on both normal and variety notes. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/winter.htm =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I have been waiting to tell you something about the Winterhilfswerk. Recently I found a book Neither Friend nor Foe, the European Neutrals in World War II by Jerrold M. Packard. I have been very interested in these five countries (count them out) since we developed that section for World War II Remembered. I am still reading the book. A few days ago I was reading about Sweden (four to go) when I found the following amazing passage: After it came to light in 1936 that money publicly collected for the ubiquitous Winterhilfe, the Nazi relief fund, had actually been used to finance German propaganda in Sweden, the Swedish government threw [Heinz] Bartels and two of his associates out of the country. Bartels was the leader of the informal network of German nationals living in Sweden. As you can imagine, I was stunned to read this. Likely Winterhilfs items exist for Sewden! I can hardly wait to report a discovery here in the Gram. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, Please forward on to Bob Olson. I stayed at the Wyndham Memphis Garden in the past and will again this year. Right across the street from the show. Not a bad rate for a king room $89.00. They might still have rooms. 1-877-999-3223 Regards Al Glaser Dear Al and Bob, Well, I had a little problem with my own room so I tried the Wyndham. First I went to the website www.wyndham.com and found a web rate of $62 (!) per night. Then I called the number that you gave. There I was able to get the webrate. The catch is that they charge the full amount of the reservation at the time of booking and there are NO changes. Still, the rate is great and at this point I am going! The final step is to add these phone numbers and web site to page 365 of the MPC book for next year! Editor Dear Editor, Regarding Bob Olsons inquiry, is your answer always to look in the book? David Dear David, I must admit that I like giving that advice. In addition to feeding my ego a little, I hope that it also sends a message to all readers about the information that is available in these books.
