From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 946 Date: Saturday, June 21, 2003 10:44 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 946 Sunday June 22, 2003 My Summer Seminar Topic by Mark “Sparky” Watson As one of the students in the advanced Military Numismatic class at the ANA Summer Seminar, I’m responsible for putting together a study project. Originally, I had discussed working on a bibliography of military numismatic related magazine articles since many of the journals from the period do not have a good comprehensive index. However, as this work did not involve guidance from the teachers, they directed me to come up with another project. After much soul searching, I proposed my topic as US War Bonds with the end result being an advanced stage numismatic exhibit. If all goes well, I plan on entering it at the fall Long Beach show – if they are still doing exhibits then. At this point, my working title is “The Life Cycle of the $25 US War Savings Bond.” For the exhibit, I have various applications used to buy bonds, examples of the $25 US War Bond - both large and small, and a canceled bond – small only, looking for a large example. Other items would include advertisement for war bonds, volunteer material used to sell the bonds, appreciation awards, etc. In addition to getting assistance from the teachers on how to put together the exhibit, I will do research on the various war bond drives and other aspects in order to put together the text blocks. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Judy went to Memphis with me this year. I was at Memphis I and all but three others. Two when I was out of the country and one when my father was critically ill. This was Judys second. It was also the 25th anniversary of the first! I had a grand plan. Gene Hesslers book US Essay, Proof, and Specimen Notes was to be released at the show. The book was ready at the printing plant in Michigan and we had tickets out of Detroit. It was a miracle. The books were on the loading dock and we arrived at the airport exactly on time. As I unloaded book cartons, exhibit materials, inventory, and minor things of that nature, Judy supervised and inventoried. Almost immediately she demanded to know where the clothes bag was. I responded that of course I did not know and frankly did not care—I had my books. Well, as you probably can guess, she did not like that answer. I directed the skycap and we moved toward the ticket counter. I had it all ready and was about to return to park the car when Judy arrived seemingly out of nowhere. She had been on the telephone with the Ohio and Michigan state patrols, the local (home) police, landlord, cleaning crew, county disaster relive agencies, federal marshals, and the national headquarters of six national headquarters for womens clothing stores. She proceeded to tell me that it was clear that I had maliciously disposed of her fashion wardrobe. After a few minutes of this, the entire terminal was listening to Judy and watching me, stoop shouldered taking it in. Eventually, I told her that she had to make up her mind if she wanted to continue berating me or go to Memphis with me and that I would need an answer when I returned from parking the car, and, oh yes, would she watch this mountain of stuff that I had there. Well the car had been towed so I figured that it was sort of a valet parking. Judy never really decided to go, but just kept talking (?) at me as we approached the counter, then as we loaded the plane and finally as we flew to Memphis. Everyone on the flight new the entire story. Soon, everyone at the show knew the story too. From my point of view, she should think of it as a shopping opportunity which she basically did, but still wanted me to suffer (which I also did). At home she was not satisfied to have new clothes. She ran an advertisement in the local paper. Much to my amazement, the person called who had found the clothes bag which I had apparently left on top of the car as we drove off. This Memphis was somewhat less eventful from the marriage relations point of view. PS I have been negligent in not mentioning this weeks poll question. Please rush to www.papermoneyworld.net and answer the poll question before Doug Bell and Ed Beamen realize how lax I have been. Then go back late tonight and answer another poll question. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Folks, This is a multi-purpose information and coordination message regarding the summer seminar session. I am planning to do my research/article/presentation on U.S. Savings Bonds. Larry gave me the idea. What about Series A through D? As you have no doubt already deduced, this fits nicely with my recent commitment to write a column for the Gram. First, I am asking concurrence and/or comment from our instructors. Second, does this conflict with the plans of any of my advanced class compatriots? Third, I can use all the help I can get. If anyone has any information or suggestions, please bring it to the class or advise me by email. I am looking forward to seeing most of you in Colorado Springs, Regards, Warner Dear Warner, Looks like you and Sparky can collaborate which should give us some great results. I will be sure to bring some special research material for the two of you. You can find the answer on Series A-D in this material so I will let you find and report on that. Sure sounds like fun to me. Editor Dear Gram, Want to make "showing up late" at a Minifest even more confusing? You mentioned a minifest at the Colorado Springs Coin Show at 2 PM (I assume Saturday). I hope to attend the show for a couple of hours on Friday morning as I have a 1:30 PM flight out of Colorado Springs on Friday. Would I qualify for pay? Ron Dear Ron, Yikes! Arriving early for a miniFest! Makes sense to me, but what to do. The monster continues to grow. Editor Dear Editor, For all you guys planning on driving days to get paid in fest money you need to think twice? I was so looking forward to my second pay at the Memphis mini fest and was never even told till after the fact that everyone was paid when I approached the paymaster in charge he handed me $12 in pay??? Was this some kind of mistake? what the heck all this hype and where's the BEEF? Not even a error note will clam this fester from bad mouthing this shortage? I was even more surprised to see that I was the only one as of yet that received this small amount what's up? A day late? and some MFC short in Michigan. Kevin Dear Kevin, We feel your pain. Rookie Festers must pay their dues! But, I think that the limited edition MemFest War bond that you received should have made up for the lack of cash. Editor/temp paymaster Dear Editor, Mini fest at 2 o'clock I assume you mean 1400 hours and which day Fri or Sat?? I will be there either day. Robert Dear Ed (we all now know what that is short for): There was some discussion of the Colorado Springs Coin Show in issue 945 of the world acclaimed MPCgram that we all know and love, even to the extent of naming a meeting location and time, BUT alas, nowhere to be found was the DATE of the show and location (a hint would be helpful such as a convention center or hotel name). We can on the other hand paly 50 questions and possibly never find the location. Again, as in a preceeding note. I am sincerely yours, The MPCgram lurker. Dear Mini Festers, You all sure are picky. You want to know the DAY?! Looks like Saturday and 1400 to me. HOWEVER, I want to point out that I am not the organizer here. Larry Gibbs thought of this. From my view this is his show!
