LEWIS AND WILLIAM H. HORTON JR. ELECTED NEW ANA PRESIDENT AND VP; THREE NEW GOVERNORS TO JOIN BOARD A new president and vice president, and three new and four incumbents have been elected to the American Numismatic Association (ANA) nine-member Board of Governors, with 8,544 ballots cast in the biennial election. ANA Vice President Gary E. Lewis of Cape Coral, Florida, was elected president, defeating ANA Governor Patricia A. Finner of Iola, Wisconsin. Lewis received 4,589 votes to Finner's 3,827. In the contested election for the vice presidency, Governor William H. Horton Jr. of Keyport, New Jersey, defeated Governor Kay Edgerton Lenker of San Diego, California, by a vote of 4,391 to 3,919. New Board members are Alan Herbert, Donald H. Kagin and Will Rossman. Incumbents re-elected are M. Remy Bourne, Arthur M. Fitts III, Barry Stuppler and John Wilson. Lewis, a 43-year life member of the ANA, was first elected to the Board of Governors in 1995 and has served on the ANA's Audit, Finance, Exhibit, Resolutions, Mediation, Commemorative Quarter and Young Numismatists Committees. He also has served as a regional, district and club representative and is the 1979 recipient of the ANA Outstanding Adult Advisor Award. Horton, a 31-year life member of the ANA, was first elected to the Board of Governors in 2001. The general chairman of the 2000 ANA World's Fair of Money in Philadelphia, he is a co-founder and first president of the Garden State Numismatic Association, and has served as president of a number of other clubs. Horton has served on a number of committees for the ANA and been recognized by several clubs for his outstanding contributions. All members of the ANA Board of Governors elected this year will assume office during the Association's 112th Anniversary Convention in Baltimore, Maryland, July 30-August 3. Installation of officers will take place at the convention banquet on Saturday, August 2. Votes garnered by the winning candidates, as tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Biggs Kofford & Company are: * 4,800 for M. Remy Bourne of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota * 4,260 for Michael S. Fey of Morris Plains, New Jersey * 4,799 for Arthur M. Fitts III of Framingham, Massachusetts * 4,576 for Alan Herbert of Belle Fourche, South Dakota * 5,749 for Donald H. Kagin of Tibourn, California * 4,195 for Bob Korver of Carollton, Texas * 3,649 for Walter A. Ostromecki Jr. of Panorama City, California * 4,289 for Will Rossman of Estes Park, Colorado * 4,939 for Stuppler of Woodland Hills, California * 3,375 for Anthony Tumonis of Tucson, Arizona * 5,918 for John Wilson of Ocala, Florida Nearly 30 percent of the eligible ANA voting membership cast ballots in this election; nearly 28 percent voted in the ANA election two years ago. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== We stay way clear of national (and international) politics here at the Gram. We even try to stay out of most numismatic politics, but every now and then we just feel compelled to go there. This is one of those times. The slate of officers elected by the ANA is an excellent one from the point of view of military money collectors and MPC collectors in particular. Gary Lewis is an MPC collector and Gramster. Indeed, he is a former air force finance officer. Bill Horton, is a paper money fan, but I do not know if he has ever collected MPC or similar issues. Remey Bourne on the board of directors is a Gramster, supporter, and collector of AMC. Of course John Wilson is a Gramster AND Fester so we need not say anything more about him. Don Kagin is a real MPC fan. He had his first introduction to Fest money at the recent summer seminar when he played poker with Fest money. Frankly, I cannot attest to the real qualifications of these people nor even of the defeated candidates, but I leased and excited about this slate of officers. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, I was taken off the Army's Retiree Recall List just before the International Paper Money Show in Memphis a few weeks ago. This so depressed me, I withdrew from the MPC/MFC world, and I think at just about the right time. Since Memphis and to when the seminars were completed in Colorado Springs, there appears to have been some activity involving yourself and possible others that requires a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigation. Is there a CID within the MPC/MFC world that can respond to the many apparent valid, rather than alleged, complaints? Howard Daniel, III Dear Gram, Sorry, guys - you had me all through the last two weeks. Now I'm trying to get caught up at home. Joe Dear Joe, What is this caught up thing? Editor Dear Editor, Hi! No Grams since #961!!! Guy! Dear Gram, "Gramless" since July 9th!! NEW RECORD!! ((slackers!)) get it together! Guy! Dear Editor, I have been given an MPC poster that displays eight MPC notes: series 661 $20; 481 $10; 611 $10; 681 $10; 651 $10; 591 $10; 692 $10 and 692 $20. At the top of each note it identifies as, "The Fiftieth Anniversary of the introduction of United States Military Payment Certificates". Below each note, is the same paragraph describing a brief history of MPC and is dated as ANA Sept. 16, 1996. The lower right hand corner indicates it is 113/125 and it has the ANA Seal stamped on it. The Printer is the Great Lakes Bank Note Company. My questions being; was this poster specific for the ANA show, who iniated the idea for this poster and who decided the specific series printed on the poster? Any information from the Gramster Group on this item would be greatly appreciated. Bob Unger Dear Bob, Well, my favorite answer to questions is that it is in the book. In this case, the souvenir cards you mention are discussed on page 165 of the current MPC book. What you have is an uncut sheet of souvenir cards issued by the ANA in 1996 for the 50th anniversary of the introduction of MPC.
