Just wanted to pass along something I heard the other day. I was at Narita Airport waiting on my flight to Seoul and an old guy sat down next to me and we began talking. He was living in Yokosuka and retired from the navy as well as civil service. Real old and literally had to yell in his ear (his batteries had run down on his hearing aid!) We started talking about MPC as he asked if I knew about it. I smiled and said a little and told him I would like to buy any he had and he seemed to be a pack rat telling me various things he had put away. Then we were talking about PX and Commissary privileges for retirees in Japan. I was telling him that for retirees those privileges were the compliments of the Japanese government and not really the military and he seemed surprised. I explained to him that as a retiree, in Japan on a visa, he only received those benefits because the Japanese government allowed it and it was covered in the SOFA and could be pulled anytime they wanted too. Now in Japan I explained that he no longer received APO privileges as the host government does not allow it. This led to a very interesting thing he said and I was unaware of it but you probably are. He said years ago when he retired and they were still using MPC on base, retirees were NOT allowed to use it. Ever hear of that? Just thought I would pass it along. Look forward to seeing everyone at the ANA. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Armed Forces Leave bonds. Do you remember those? We have discussed them a few times here. The first ever listing of these interesting items appeared on page 393 of World War II Remembered. A few examples have been found over the past decade. I received an interesting call today. It was from a staff member of some US senator. A constituent asked the senator what to do with his AFLB! Then somehow the staffer found me! Of course the question was WIIW (what is it worth). That is a difficult question to be sure, but you can also be sure that I would like to buy the item. Heck, I would just like to see it! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gramsters, Just to let you know I have updated my web site with over 200 new notes added to my MPC listings. You can view it at www.denlys.com . Tom Denly Gram, Believe it or not I just cashed in my frequent flyer miles on American and got a ticket to DFW for the Dallas show. Are we doing the MPC BBQ again? Marcus Turner Dear Paymaster, Could a relationship of issued AFC/MFC be established for par value in tulip bulbs on a daily basis? Cheers, Colin Dear Gram, My comments on the new dates for Fest V: Sign me up to attend. Thanks, Ron Waddell Dear Gram, I would like to thank all my fellow MPC collectors for there support during the recent ANA elections. I look forward to serving you as the next ANA President. Gary Lewis Still getting TWO. You will now have all the time in the world, for the next month or so, to solve this problem and I will not be reminding you about the problem every day. Val and I leave here some time tomorrow heading for Baltimore. I know some of you will think that tomorrow is very early to be heading for ANA but we have to make a side trip to California for a week of family festivities. I EXPECT that by the time I return to this computer in early August that the PROBLEM will be solved. Paymaster Dear Editor, I will be sending out a separate mailing to about 40 MPC collectors in the Texas area in about two weeks in conjunction with the Dallas Paper Money Show and MiniFEST. It would be very useful to have a specific date and Time for the intended event. I will be unable to attend the Baltimore ANA event this year. For those attending, bring your MPC FEST Challenge coin (for those of you how do not keep it with them at all times). While it is not widely know yet, Don Kagin was the recipient of a challenge coin while at the ANA summer Seminar (at a game of chance with cards). It might prove to be interesting to challenge him. With selling a famous fabricated metal disc from 1804, he should be good for a drink or two.
