From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 970 Date: Sunday, July 20, 2003 5:21 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 970 Sunday July 20, 2003 AFTER THOUGHTS By Harold Kroll I know it has been two weeks since returning from the ANA Summer Seminar, but so much to catch up on after being gone for a week, and what a week it was. This was the second year for me as I had to pass on last years event due to circumstances beyond my control but the adrenalin was running high by the time I arrived in Colorado Springs Saturday afternoon. There were two classes this year, regular and advanced, there were 5 of us in the advanced class including Joe Boling as our instructor and 12 in the regular class with Fred Schwan as the instructor. Each class took a different approach to the content with the advanced class having to prepare a show and tell project to be presented to the regular class. Sunday morning started with a trip to the ANA library book sale where I picked up quite a few reference books at bargain prices. Next stop, the Rendezvous With Destiny WWII exhibit at the ANA Headquarters was quite a sight to see. The "WEASAL" on display would make a great vehicle for deer hunting. The monies on display show and tell how the use of different currencies played a big part in the war efforts. If at all possible you should make an effort to view this exhibit. A heart sinking feeling came over me on Sunday afternoon while we were eating dinner, I had been put in charge of carrying the paybooks for the new seminarians. In the course of getting ready for the trip I changed out breifcases and it hit me that I had not transferred the paybooks to the case I was taking. Sure enough on return to room and checking, no paybooks. I called my wife and asked, well pleaded, for her to get the paybooks out Monday morning via express mail. She agreed to do this and I felt some what reprieved, but then I had to face the finance officer and admit to my failure of not having brought the paybooks. After a severe tounge lashing and I lost count of the list of demerits, I was relieved of my post and other arrangements were made for payday activities. The first day of class, Monday, started off OK with Joe assigning a project for us to do, things were going very well and then the advanced class found out that the regular class had been issued AFC training notes, denomination being in DINARS. We were told that being in the advanced class exempted us from being issued training money due to previous training. We all disagreed as we needed to be familiar with the design and denominations of the notes for future use. As you can guess our pleas were turned away. To top this off we then learned of specimen DINAR notes having been distributed to the regular class and again the advanced class was passed over, now we were discussing the thought of leaving the advanced course and attending the regular class before another note was released. Pay call was announced and again I had to explain my incompetence to bring the paybooks to all the class and that they would be there on Tuesday by noon and they did arrive safe and sound. The class was more understanding than the chief finance officer. Notes issued for payday were Series 1944 DINARS in the following denominations, 1, 2, 3, 10, 20, and 30 dinar. Each student was paid on a scale of how many events were attended in the past. Then the craziness starts with everyone looking for certain serial numbers, errors, and replacements. You talk about some serious trading going on, yes indeed. Many of these notes traded on a one for one basis and then it changed to a note and boot and then a note and FRNs and from there it got worse, became a challenge to acquire the notes you were seeking. These notes are also used to buy reference books, chit books for refreshments, Fest Savings Bonds, souvenir notes, a collectible in its own right and lastly to play poker with. I never played poker before betting with DINARS, different but interesting. At the time of issue, these notes were par with the dollar, 1 to 1. Inflation set in quickly and the rates for the dinar started a rapid fall in value. David Seelye listed the exchange rate of the dinar in a previous gram. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== The C.N.A. convention was great, as I said yesterday. The first think that I found was a literature dealer. I spent a long time going through his stuff. I only bought two items from him: one cheap, one not. The cheap one was a special edition of the Numismatist for October 1942. It is called Section II and convention number and titled Proceedings of the American Numismatic Association Convention 1942. I have an interest in the war time conventions that I might have mentioned here in the Gram in the past. It (the interest) started when I found a 1942 convention medal/badge. That was the first time that I had thought about this aspect of the war. I would have guessed that there was no convention at all 1942-1945. The convention badge is decidedly an emergency product, thin and relatively poor quality. I really need more information on this medal. I have tried a little to find this info, but sure need some help. The proceedings have lots of information even if they do not include any information that I could find on the convention medal/badge. Concerning location for the 1943 convention Judge Moss made the following comments: My colleague and myself have carefully considered that contingency [1943 convention location] so far, we fell that the war will be over and we are going to make three suggestions as to where the next meeting place should take place, either Rome, Berlin or Tokyo. A little later there is more serious discussion about having a convention in Chicago in 1943, but there was also discussion about not having one at all. Prominent numismatists are mentioned for going into military service. One interesting proposal is that people who went into service could have their membership number reserved and be reinstated after returning to civilian life. I should be able to answer many of these questions by consulting David Bowers two-volume ANA centennial history, but I cannot find it. I certainly own a set. I admit that I do not use it often, but I do have one. Wait. At this very moment I see it! Now if I can get back to that bookshelf, I should have my answers—or at least some of them. I made it. I have the book The war years are in volume one. The first thing that I must say is that there is more information here than I expected. I am going to have to read these years in detail. I would put the entire two volumes on my (notional) to-read list, but there is no hope that I will finish the list as it stands now—so many books, so little time. Well, there was a convention in Chicago in 1943, but I cannot find anything on the war-years medals. Once again, I hope that someone will help. Specifically, I believe that these medals are listable for the next edition of Remembered (based upon their (apparent) emergency nature.) =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, Now that the date has been decided, sign me up for the big one Fest V. Robert Drew Dear Esteeemed Editor, I noticed a Gramster asking for the time of the IBNS meeting at the ANA. It is at 11AM on Saturday in Room 317. The NI meeting follows it at Noon in the same room. "Paper" Gramsters are invited to the IBNS meeting and "metal" (club tokens) Gramsters are invited to the NI meeting. You do not have to be a member to attend either meeting, and there is a show and tell part to both meetings where you can introduce yourself and describe an interesting piece for a minute or two to the other attendees. See you at the meetings, and at the NI/NBS/IBNS club table where Gramsters are welcome to visit, rest and use as a message center.
