From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 972 Date: Wednesday, July 23, 2003 9:19 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 972 Tuesday/Wednesday July 23, 2003 Change of Life By Joe Boling Fred and I started out strong in Colorado on transferring notes from my WWII Remembered to his draft second edition, but he soon got more interested in poker, so we only got a portion of the work done. He's going to have to come out here for a couple weeks sometime to get really cracking on this project. I had a minor epiphany while driving home from Colorado. Having had so much fun for two weeks in numismatics (though I was working like a dog the whole time I was there - no poker games for me), I realized how much I miss being able to play with my collections. I decided that I don't need to see 400+ live performances a year; 200 will do, and I can do that just going to theater 3-4 days a week (in fact, going just Thursday-Sunday for 40 weeks would probably total over 300 shows). That will leave me three or so days to do other things - like numismatics, or actually performing in shows instead of watching them. So I have started to cut back, going to a show because I really WANT to see it, not just because there is an open spot in my calendar. And apropos of this, shortly after I got back, a theater director called and asked if I could do my one-man show in his theater's slot in the Seattle Fringe Festival this fall. I told him I'd be delighted, so I have a seven-performance run from 19-28 September. If you are going to be in Seattle in that time, let me know and I can tell you where to come see me. Yes, numismatics gets mentioned in the show - even World War II Remembered, and everyone who comes gets a wooden nickel. I doubt that I will make the minifest on Friday next week after the PI forum, because best-of-show judging occurs on Friday afternoon, and as soon as that is finished, I have to prepare the press release naming the exhibit winners. But I usually am able to come to the IBNS meetings on Saturdays, so I will see you minifesters there. And as long as you are at the convention, don't fail to walk through the exhibit area to check out the work of other collectors. There are practically no military-related exhibits this year, but lots of other interesting material. My next column will be filed from Baltimore (unless I get rambunctious and write one a day early). =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I try to resist commenting in this space on articles or columns, but I cannot resist in this case. In addition, I do not have the energy at this moment to be more creative. Joe just does not appreciate the work required to play poker! Furthermore, he underestimates the value to the seminar of exercising the Fest money. Other than mission, why would I have put so much energy into the (poker) project at the seminar? =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, I have recently attended my first Mini Fest. This event has me now faced with a few questions for the Finance Officer. I have been given some conflicting information concerning future pay. It has been established that our Pay Grade is based on the number of Fest Event we have attended. From one source I have been told that for purposes of Pay, MPC Fest Events include the annual MPC Fest, the ANA Military Numismatic Summer Seminars, and the one time Rendezvous with Destiny event held at the ANA. Mini Fest do not count as an event for MFC pay purposes. Another source has told me that all events, to include Mini Fest events are to be counted. Could the senior Finance Officer address this question? Another question dealing with Mini Fest events deal with our Pay Books. As requested, I brought my Pay Book to the Mini Fest in Colorado Springs. Although I stood in the Pay Line and received Pay at this event it was not logged into my Pay Book. I believe other Mini Fest events had entries logged. What is the official policy concerning Mini Fest payment? Are they to be logged? Realizing, that often payment received at Mini Fest has no value other than a souvenir of attendance that can be of value to some Festers that collect anything related to an MPC event. Again, Can the senior Finance Officer address this as well, hopefully before the next scheduled Mini Fest in Baltimore? Dick Freyser Dear Dick, Judy was not available so I consulted with the chief finance officer. First there are no rules. This is an evolutionary process. The first Fest money was not issued until Fest I (and the term Fest money did not appear on the money until Fest II). Mini fests are not controlled by any central authority (as if any of this stuff were controlled by any authority). It is my vision that pay increases with each major event attended. While it was my vision that manifests would not receive an entry in the paybook, I am now leaning the other way. Even if any entry was not made, the point of presenting a pay book at the Colorado Springs mini Fest was to qualify for PAY. Those at the mini Fest without a pay book received a souvenir note, but not pay. An interesting in between situation concerns those at the seminar, with a pay book, but not enrolled in the military seminar. These people are entitled to pay and we made entries in their books. Like I said, it is evolutionary. Your thoughts are wanted. Editor Dear Editor, I am pleased to see the change of dates for the 2004 Fest so it does not conflict with Masstricht. I sent an email about this some time back & I am not sure if it had any effect but the change to avoid the clash is most appreciative. Cheers, Trevor Dear Trevor, Thanks for writing before and now too. Yes, I received your earlier letter about the conflict, but did not get around to running it (sorry). In keeping with our publication policy, when I find it, I will run it. Look for it in 2008 or 09.
