In the case of the first series of MPC, it appears that a rather large percentage of the series 461 in Eupope were not accounted for, since no one knew about the concept of "C Day". These quotes, from USAREUR are from a series of volumes titled: Occupation Forces in Europe Series (this from Volume IV). These are the only two entries I found related to the introduction and destruction of the first series of MPC. The first entry was included in a long discussion about the organization and locations of various Disbursing Offices: "Prior to the move from Paris to Friedberg, the Paris Disbursing Office had received by air from the United States $247,791,200 of military payment certificates, which were distributed to offices in the European and Mediterranean Theaters prior to "C" Day, 16 September 1946, the date on which they were exchanged for occupation currency." A little bit later in this same volume there was an entry related to the destruction of series 461 and the introduction of series 471: "The new series 471 military payment certificates were received early in 1947 and were distributed on 10 March 1947. All preliminary plans for the conversion were kept top secret. The superceded series 461 was called in, recorded and burned by a currency destruction committee of thirty officers under the supervision of Col. A. G. Wing. The committee verified more than $233,600,000 in notes of denominations of from five cents to ten dollars." So, in Europe about $15 million was not accounted for during the first "C Day" (That is about 8%.) I think that on subsequent conversions there was a smaller percentage. What do you think ? We are studying some nationwide cordless internet as a possible partial solution. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, Your analysis about the date of issue of the AFLBs is correct. The date of issue goes back to the date of separation of the service member. Those who had separated from service prior to the passage of the Act authorizing the bonds were able to apply for them retroactive to their date of separation. (This was reported by me in an earlier Gram.) You will be fortunate if you end up with this piece considering it is in the hands of the original holder who has the right to cash it in. If the Senator's office knew where to send him, it would have likely been lost forever. Jim Downey Dear Gram, Now I am further confused. To quote Harold's original letter, he says "Travel pay call was announced after lunch and a new series was introduced, Series 1944A DINARS. The only major difference between this and Series 1944 was the addition of the denomination in text as well as numerals. This was just like the situation with Allied military lire 1944 and 1944A!" (Italics added.) I interpret the last sentence to refer to the actual AM lire and therefore should have read "1943 and 1943A". Warner Dear Warner, Well, the most interesting point might be that for most people italics and other special characters get lost in transmission of the Gram. That is why I avoid them. We even avoid or omit apostrophes and quotation marks because they frequently get translated in transmission. Editor Dear Gram, Well, Steve let the cat out of the bag. The invites to the grand opening will not be mailed until Aug.5. So y'all know about it before anybody else. Be kind in your opinions since I do receive the MPC "Daily," and I may come back and haunt you about any unkind comments. It does not make much difference since I donated it to them last September.
