Interest ceased accruing upon reaching maturity. A $100.00 bond would have earned only $2.50 per year for five years for a total of $12.50 of accrued interest. In other words, a $100.00 bond has a cash value of $112.50 to someone eligible to redeem it. A short history of the Armed Forces Leave Act of 1946 can be found at http://www.dod.mil/prhome/N4B1.html When you read the material on this site, you will learn that bonds were issued in $25.00 increments. This is what I suspected because all the known examples are multiples of $25.00. Service members were compensated for unused leave including BAS, BAQ, subsistence, etc. Needless to say, these amounts would not calculate to even $25.00 increments for every service member. It appears that checks were issued for the difference. I have divined this from the fact that the Treasury form for redemption also includes checks issued pursuant to the Armed Forces Leave Act and the $25.00 increments of the bonds. In other words, if a service member's eligible accrued leave benefits were $78.45; he would have been issued a $75.00 AFLB and a check for $3.45. (This probably explains the $0.40 check that I have from 1947 that indicates it was for Armed Forces Leave.) The checks would have been payable immediately (and most of them would likely have been cashed), but the bonds were not redeemable until the end of five years after the date of issue, except that bonds could be used to pay premiums, loans and interest thereon, or reserve on United States Government Life or National Service Life Insurance prior to maturity. We know the bonds are rare, how rare do you suppose the checks are? Who would have saved them? =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== This is a first. I started working on this Gram this evening. Then I remembered working on one this morning. I could not remember if I had sent out a Gram today. Please do not get me wrong, I do not begrudge you a bonus Gram now and then, but still, I would like to know it. I had to poke around quite a bit to determine that I had not sent a Gram. Along a similar line (forgetfulness/old age(?)) I had another interesting experience today. I was reading Romain Probsts catalog on Luxembourgeois paper money. I was checking data in Remembered and found a few little fixes. Then I came across the issues for Luxembourg prepared in Germany during the war. I thought that these were likely new listings. Then to my surprise, I found that we had them listed in the occupied governments section (see page 773). =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, Get two copies every day it's issued at my AOL address...but for God's sake do not try to get rid of the extra copy. You might FUBAR it. See you in Baltimore. Wendell Dear Gram, I mentioned at the summer seminar that I saw a $25 Series E bond (not a War bond) on ebay that was dated June 1944. The bond is a replacement for a bond issued in June 1944 - the issue date of the replacement is Oct 14, 1953. Also, I picked up a State of New York - $10,000 War bonus bond. It is an issue of March 1948, actually issued on Dec 15, 1950, and due January 1, 1955. It doesn't say anything about WWII but I assume it is for vetrans of WWII. Is this correct? Is this similiar to the State of Michigan "Veterans Bond" on page 395 of WWII Remembered? Thought you might have seen these.
