From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 978 Date: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 7:21 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 978 Tuesday July 29, 2003 State Bonuses By Jim Downey After many of the wars in which the United States has participated, many states governments passed bills authorizing the payment of bonuses to veterans. The bonuses were usually one-time payments of nominal amounts to show appreciation for service during the war. The states issued bonds to finance the payment of these bonuses. The Michigan and New York bonds discussed in the recent Gram were issued for that purpose. The bonds would likely have been purchased by institutional investors such as banks, brokerage houses, etc. They were not issued to veterans as payment for the bonuses like Armed Forces Leave Bonds were. As with most state issued securities, they would have formed part of a fixed-income, government issued portfolio. The bonds would have matured many years ago and those redeemed were presumably cancelled or otherwise destroyed. At this point I have been able to determine that Washington, Montana, Oregon, New York, Michigan, Delaware and West Virginia issued bonds to finance the payment of veterans bonuses after WWII. Believe it or not, Guam apparently authorized the payment of a veteran?s bonus for WWII veterans who were residents of Guam sometime in the 1990s. It does not appear that bonds were issued for them, though. Database Coordinator Needed By Doug Bell Activity in the MPC database has picked up substantially since the announcement that Bill McNease had found a serial number match. This is very good news. You should enter your notes: your collection, your duplicates, your inventory. www.papermoneyworld.net This is to the advantage of everyone. We are missing some opportunities to gather important research data because our efforts are not coordinated. Many notes appear in public places like auctions (ebay and floor events). I know that some people record all or most of the MPC that appear on ebay. Others attend floor auctions and shows. It would be idea if we could create a system to gather the information. This could be done is several ways. The project could be divided into the parts mentioned (ebay, floor auctions, shows) or there could be some other approach. Here is what I think that we need to do. First, gather information and ideas from readers. Second recruit a coordinator to implement the plan that we develop. The coordinator need not be the person to do all/most of the work. He/she in my view would, well, coordinate the efforts. Please send your thoughts to the Gram. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I feel strange. It is Tuesday of ANA Convention week. Every year for the past 30 (except for two years ago when my mother died), I have been enroute to the site of the ANA convention on this day. Often I was already there. This year I am not going to the convention (at least I do not think I am going). I do not have a big conflict and certainly have nothing against the ANA or the convention?far from it. It just boils down to that I have too much to do otherwise. I also have been getting enough numismatic stimulation of late with Memphis and the seminar. Looking in the "honor system" cash box, spotted a Series 1993 $50 bill that just wasn't up to par - paper didn't feel right and the printing was off. After taking it home and looking at it through a loupe, could readily see the printing dots from a desktop printer. A couple of months after Bob Hope's 99th birthday, I sent an email to him and thanked him for his service to our country, and especially to our military. But I was guaranteed to see all of his shows in reruns for the rest of my life. His secretary sent me a reply saying that he got a kick out of my email.
