From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 979 Date: Wednesday, July 30, 2003 8:53 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 979 Wednesday July 30, 2003 Report 1 from ANA By Joe Boling I was talking to someone today about "when Fred gets here," and had to pull up after about three sentences and say "Oh, but Fred isn't coming." Not much to report yet. Today was PNG day, followed by late ANA dealer set-up. The Master Sergeant arrived today, but he is not staying with me (he seems to prefer sleeping with his wife near DC for the week). I was given a ticket to the PNG banquet tonight, the first time I recall having participated in that event. It was a good meal, with two free drinks (I had only one (soft), following with water), and a lounge act that started before everyone had their dinner (an act that involved pulling audience members to the stage for a 45-minute hypnosis act, meaning that many of those participating did not get to eat their meals - not very slick on the part of the performer). Before the entertainment, PNG made a slew of awards. I was surprised to find that some of the people who were honored are names I do not know (let alone knowing the people attached to the names). Obviously my contact with mainline dealers in US material has been limited over the years. The exhibits are mostly installed, but I have been looking at them only to check certain award eligibilities and for disqualification problems (such as the exhibit with the life-sized copy of a US note in it - since his object was to show the signatures, I had him cut off the top portion, leaving the signatures showing). The medal for exhibitors and judges this year is gorgeous, a three-inch version of the convention medal with an inscription on the reverse linking it to the exhibiting and judging program. [Oh no! Now I really am feeling some regret. Can I judge on Saturday if I get there by 3pm? ?Ed.] I saw only one tiny pile of military-related notes on PNG day, with nothing interesting among them (a few MPC, a few AMC). Tomorrow will see all the world PM dealers set up, but I will be much more busy on ANA-related tasks, so will get to see few dealers until Saturday/Sunday. More later in the week if something significant happens (the PI forum is Friday). =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== The ANA Convention is now in full swing without me?how can they do that? I guess if I would show up it would help. I hope that some of you who are in attendance (or will be in the next few days) will send us reports. Your Gram needs you. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== letters/submissions for Gram 1000 special double issue should be sent to MPCGram1000@yahoo.com Dear Gram, I attended the Shreveport Coin Show on the 26th of July and made a point about asking about Charlton E.Meyer, Jr. I did not know him but I found him and enjoyed talking with him about Camp Money. He was a very interesting man and told me a few things about Camp Ruston located close to my home. He said that he was looking forward to the opening of his exhibit at the Holocaust Museum at Houston in late August. Before signing off, I can report that very little MPC was available in Shreveport this past weekend. William Choate Dear Gram, You can remove my list of MPC Forsale from the Gram - they are all sold. The Gram does the job. Thanks. Also, that was great information on the veterans bonds in Jim's article. Do you (or Jim) know the amount of the bonus? Thanks, Ron Dear Ron, Thank you for selling your notes through the Gram. The bonuses were paid by the respective states and almost certainly for different amounts. That should be part of the research. Editor Dear Gram, Due to a quirk in the rules and regs, when I returned home after Vietnam, I got a Veteran's Bonus from Louisiana and Texas. Bonds were not part of the bonus unless they were issued like municipal bonds and in that case I wouldn't know it. I got $500 from Louisiana because I entered the Army from Louisiana. In Texas I qualified for the Texas Veteran's Land Board loans because I was born in Texas. (Just another good reason to be a Texan). The Texas loan was for $20,000 @ %4 for purchase of land. Bill McNease Dear Bill, I knew that there was a reason that I did not want to play poker with you. When I got back from Vietnam I received from Ohio $600 (I am fairly sure). As with you, if bonds were sold to fund this, I do not know about them (but would like to). Editor Dear Editor, What follows is a transcription of a radio spot announcement from the American Forces Vietnam Network, recorded off the air in July 1970. "When you give MPC to a cab driver, you are not only making him very happy, you are making Charlie overwhelmed with joy. Why? Because Charlie needs money for weapons. When you pay with MPC instead of Piasters, you are giving the Viet Cong the very money he needs. You may be contributing to your buddy's funeral. Don't use MPC on the Vietnamese economy." You can hear this recording at the following Internet page: http://personal.riverusers.com/~shellbek/ (scroll down to item 5 under Sounds) David Klinger =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== http://calendar.yahoo.com/mpcgram American Numismatic Association Convention.
