From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 981 Date: Saturday, August 02, 2003 9:29 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 981 Saturday August 2, 2003 EYES FOR THE NAVY By Jim Downey At the beginning of World War One, the United States Navy was unprepared for the conflict. Like the Army, the Navy was poorly trained and inadequately supplied. The Navy put out a call to civilians for donations of binoculars, spy-glasses, telescopes, sextants and chronometers. The program was called ?Eyes for the Navy? and was made the subject of a number of war posters. Thousands of Americans sent optical and navigational devices to the Navy. The items were not exactly donated, however. Those who sent items to the Navy received a check for $1.00 from the Navy Disbursing Office as payment for their article. The check is on the standard white United States Treasury check used during the period. Treasury checks during this period had a line indicating the object for which they were drawn. The Eyes for the Navy checks identify the item donated. Accompanying the check was an unsigned letter from the Navy that read as follows: The enclosed check, payable to your order, in the sum of $1.00, is payment in full for article purchased from you by the NAVY. However, if practicable, at the termination of the war to return same to you, the $1.00 payment will then constitute the rental price. A complete record, giving you name (sic) and address with complete description of the article, will be kept at the Navy Department. Each article is also engraved with a number which acts as a key to designate where same is to be returned at the termination of the war. In this connection, the return may be facilitated if the Navy Department is advised as to any change in address. The participants also received a large engraved certificate and a letter signed by the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. That letter read as follows: Your prompt and patriotic response to the NAVY'S call for binoculars, telescopes, and spy-glasses, is most appreciated. The glasses will be very useful in the prosecution of Naval Operations until victory is won. At the termination of the war, if possible, every effort will be made to return them to you, when it is hoped that you will feel compensated for any evidence of wear, by the knowledge that you have supplied 'Eyes for the NAVY' during a very trying period. On behalf of the NAVY, I wish to thank you most heartily. These letters are highly sought after by autograph collectors as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy during World War One was Franklin Roosevelt. The Navy returned as many items as possible. A complete set of these items, including the binoculars, letters, check and certificate, recently appeared on an episode of the Antiques Roadshow. The appraiser passed over the check saying that it had ?some collector interest? as a financial document and put most of his appraisal towards the Roosevelt autograph. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== My catalog for the Dallas Lyn Knight sale of the R. A. Medina (and others) collection arrived yesterday. Such events are virtual reenactments of Sears catalogs arriving in the West in the 1880s. Wish books inspire imagination. I have not worn out my catalog yet?but I might. Just as anticipated, it includes lots of great material for my collection. Almost certainly more than the budget will allow, but then we should not let such details get in the way (I seldom have). As usual Knight et al have done a nice/great job with the catalog. I will try to comment on some of the items in the next few days, but I also want to encourage your review of the catalog and material. You can also review the material by visiting www.lynknight.com. I found the site responsive and better than most. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== letters/submissions for Gram 1000 special double issue should be sent to MPCGram1000@yahoo.com Fred, Been quite active buying and selling better MPC notes here........... Also challenged Don Kagin with my MPCFEST coin and he was without his...owes me a drink..... Mike Dear Editor, I see the Veteran's Bonds issue is taking on a life of its own. Researching them will be painstaking since the records (if they still exist) would be dispersed among the states. I will do some poking around and let you know what I find.
