From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 982 Date: Sunday, August 03, 2003 8:57 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 982 Sunday August 3, 2003 Baltimore Mini Fests Report By Dick Freyser I am happy to report that the two Mini Fest held at the ANA Show in Baltimore were held and that there were over a dozen participants at each. These events did not have a specific time table but were scheduled as "following" the scheduled events of the 'Philippine Forum' on Friday and the 'IBNS meeting' on Saturday. Unbeknownst to me the Philippine Forum was scheduled from 1300 to after 1700 so rather than having a meeting, at the first break Mini Fest Pay envelopes were available to festers who presented pay books. There were a few non festers who also receive a souvenir note. I did stay for the entire 'Philippine Forum' meeting and did provide pay envelopes to festers throughout the meeting. I believe every fester in attendance received their pay on Friday. The Saturday Mini Fest was to be held at the end of the IBNS meeting. At the end of this meeting we announced that the Mini Fest would be held in room 315 as the room we were in had another event scheduled. Those in Attendance at this Mini Fest also received Pay Envelopes. At both Mini Fest 25 pay envelopes were mixed and each fester choose his/her envelope at random from the stack. The pay for Friday consisted of a set of Replica MPC Series 691 with a rubber stamp on the back with 'ANA BALTIMORE 2003', 'MPC MINI FEST', 'AUGUST 1 2003'. Each note was also stamped with a six digit serial number in UV ink on the front. There were a total of 25 sets made. For Non Pay Book holders I had prepared 100 replica MPC series 681 $1.00 note with the same markings. The only difference the date line is 'AUGUST 1&2 2003'. I have a number of these notes available. If you wish one please send a SASE and a donation check for $10 (or more) for the scholarship fund to Dick Freyser email me at dfreyser@cs.com for my snail mail address. If you were a Mini Fest attendee on Saturday, I failed to include one of these notes in the Pay envelopes, if you did not receive one and wish one please email me with your address and I will send one to you at my cost. The pay for Saturday consisted of a set of Replica MPC Series 701 stamped like the first set except the date was 'AUGUST 2 2003'. Those in attendance on Saturday also received a set of notes made by Russ Walsh. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/ana_baltimore.htm All Festers should know of Russ's talents. He is the designer, of The MPC Fest IV canteen chits, the Series 031 MFC, the Fest IV T-shirt design and perhaps other Fest material I am not aware of. Russ has made a series of $1, $5, $10 and $25. Emergency Fest Payment Certificates. These beautiful official looking notes are serial numbered with a Prefix 'A' and an eight digit serial number from 1 to 25. Each note carries the printed signatures of Fred Schwan (battalion clerk) and Russ Walsh (battalion finance clerk). There is also an ANA seal circled in blue with the words 'World's Fair of Money Baltimore Maryland' and an outer circle in red with stars and "ANA July 30 - August 3, 2003' There also appears to be some micro printing under the lower left corner of the note. Too small for me to make out but I'm told by others it is 'Keystone Banknote Company'. Printed on the back of these notes are "ANA World's Fair of Moneyฎ" (top border), and "Baltimore, Maryland 2003" (bottom border). The back field of the $1 note has the following text in 6 different languages: "This certificate good for 1 dollar in military festival certificates, and is governed under the rules and regulations of festival headquarters." Identical text is found on each note with only the value being different. The notes increase in size with the denomination and each note is a different color. I have no doubt that these limited notes will be much sought after by MFC collectors. In addition to the Mini Fest, throughout my two days at ANA I made challenges and received challenges from many Festers and even non-festers who had MPC challenge coins and challenged me. At different times I even challenged our ANA president and Nancy. I am happy to report that Nancy met the challenge. I am also very pleased to note that despite their heavy schedule, both John and Nancy made appearances at both Mini Fest. Dallas BBQ By Doug Bell The second Dallas MPC barbeque/mini Fest will be held on Saturday from noon to about 3pm. Like last year we will have, what else, barbeque? Please send me a reservation so that I can try to figure out how many people will be there. Also please be sure to bring your paybook. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== To say that the mini Fests sound like a success is certainly an understatement at this point. It sure sounds like everyone had a good time. We look forward to some more reports. I never finished telling you about my visit to Windsor and the Canadian Numismatic Association Convention. The most interesting actual item that I bought is not even really a numismatic item, but I think that you will like it. It is a pass issued in June 1945 for Walter Westing to visit Brussels. That is interesting. But look at the back of the pass. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/uspass.htm It has no fewer than six rubber stamps applied and an additional important manuscript notation. Every one of the stamps is interesting, but some more than others. In particular the stamp pertaining to conversion is very interesting. Can you make out what Westing converted (and recoverted)? I cannot quite make it out and want your opinion before I shoot my mouth off. Then he received a partial pay of $10. I think that this is a very interesting document. Tell us what you think. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== letters/submissions for Gram 1000 special double issue should be sent to MPCGram1000@yahoo.com Dear Gram, I would like to thank Dick and Loretta Freyser for hosting the mini-Fest at the Baltimore ANA. They worked hard to make sure that everyone got what was coming to them (take that anyway you want!) Those that had them, got their paybooks signed and those of us that didn't have one received a souvenir anyway. All who attended were good sports and, it is no wonder that the Gram and Festers are getting the reputation they deserve. (This too can be interpreted in many ways.) But most of all thanx to Dick and Loretta. Len Dear Gram, Am having fun sitting here studying my Knight catalog. You are correct that it is a wish book. I am looking forward to Dallas.
