[Line from a Christopher Robin story, about how CR feigns sickness one day to keep the adults hopping.] Just received tonight from Beijing, a scan of an unknown Manchukuo agricultural savings bond series dated February 1946! They seem to have been preparing the stock well in advance. This is release #1, so even the bond's series was being planned six months before issue. Where on earth has this been hiding since 1945? The piece found is far from pristine. ANA final report - the Saturday banquet was one of the nicest meals I have ever had at such an affair, really excellent food. It apparently was not ready on time, because emcee Randy Campbell launched into the awards immediately, and eventually announced that the dinner was almost ready. A couple of awards later we finally got fed. ANA military money seminarian (2002) Max Spiegel won the YN best of show award with an exhibit unrelated to military money - "The Old West," illustrating how western images have been adopted for US coinage (bronze, nickel, and gold, throwing him into the general and specialized class). The open BoS went to an exhibit that IS military-related, but not money - medals. It is titled "A Selection of US Mint Medals from the War of 1812, Engraved by Moritz Fuerst" and was placed by Lenny Vaccaro. The People's Choice award went to John Whitney for his 43-case non-competitive exhibit of US notes. This exhibit will blow your mind if you ever get to see it. Not only does he have a substantial number of the major types of US note, his cases of fancy serial numbers are simply unbelievable. Say he has a note with serial 00088000 - well he also has all the other digit pairs in the same position (00011000, 00022000, etc) - case after case of these, overlapped to show several score of notes per case - simply incredible. Also ladders, reverse ladders, radars.... Scads of serial number 1 notes, many examples of changeover pairs (but not just the pair - five notes on each side of the changeover), error notes you would not believe ( a full case of double-denomination notes, suspended over mirrors with barely any room between notes to look through to the mirror image below), a half-case of nationals with "Whitney" in the title or town name, specimen notes, and bushels of others that I am not remembering. Shades of Amon Carter - this collection must have kept several dealers employed for many years. The Farran Zerbe award went to Charles J. Ricard, Charles N. Ricard, and the Lighthouse family, a multi-generational award stretching back a century. I have not seen the Zerbe done this way before. It must be the year of the family, because the Lifetime Achievement award went to the Al Baber family, all of whom (Al, Dorothy, Larry, and Larry's wife (Celia?)) were/are long-time ANA volunteers or officers. The Medallic Sculpture award went to Ron Landis, who was unfortunately not there not receive it. The Outstanding Government Service award was not made this year. ANA's outstanding YN advisor award went to military money seminarian Mark Hotz. Sunday morning I finally got a chance to do some serious shopping. I had been able to walk the aisles through about row 7 during the week, a half-hour at a time every other day (there were sixteen aisles). I had discovered about Tuesday that I had come away from home with only four checks in my checkbook, but I did not let that stop me. The last several purchases I made Sunday were on memo, checks to be dispatched after I got home. It's nice to have been around long enough to become known and trusted. The exhibit committee met Thursday and made some major changes in the exhibit program for the spring shows. The next spring convention is in Portland 26-28 March 2004; watch for more next week on how to prepare exhibits for that event. Story-tellers will love it. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== A story on the front page of the Monday Wall Street Journal told of problems created by attempts to control SPAM. The thrust of the story was about what apparently are called innocents. These are people/groups who have their email blocked as spam when it is not. Specifically, mentioned in the article is AOL. We know something about that! Basically, the article is critical of AOL, but it does not give any tips and AOL does not sound excited about protecting innocents. There is no byline for the author of the article so it was probably written by several people on their editorial staff. It reports that a ?July 10 report from the Senate Appropriations Committee urges the Defense Department to cooperate with the U.S. Mint in getting dollar coins into the hands of service members and thus into circulation. The committee says stateside military commissaries, exchanges and clubs should hand out dollar coins for change instead of dollar bills. Overseas bases would not have to be part of the plan.? If the plan is implemented, should the Sac Dollar be included as a ?military? coin in our collections?
