From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 985 Date: Wednesday, August 06, 2003 10:04 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 985 Wednesday August 6, 2003 Baltimore Advenrues By Ron Waddel Thought I would add a few more comments on the Baltimore convention. The larger shows are always worth attending because of the wealth of material that is on display - from great exhibits to material for sale. Having a Mini-fest just adds to the enjoyment and Dick did a great job. I don't think he mentioned in his report how difficult it is to get UV ink and get the pay ready. Also, the Emergency Fest Payment Certificates are just great. How do you guys get these "banknotes" printed? It was difficult to forsee that the scheduled time on Friday would be a problem and I think Dicks task would have been much easier if the meeting had a specific time and location but things worked out fine. Saturdays meeting was much better and there was some "show and tell", which can turn into "show and sell", which is even better. Picked up a nice German "tank gas ration" receipt. I had scheduled a meeting for chopmarked coins, used in the China trade, and much of my time was related to that but still I found a few WWII related items and a couple of nice MPC's. All in all it was a very nice show. I got to see quite a few Festers that I had not seen since Fest IV or the Summer seminar. This may be the best part of the show. Joel Shafer-Managing Director, World Bank Note Division Lyn Knight Currency Auctions I would like to take this opportunity to write about some material that we will offer in our Dallas sale later this month at the Sixth National Paper Money and Historic Artifacts Show from August 20-24, 2003: Sheraton Grand Hotel at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport 4440 West John Carpenter Freeway Irving, Texas 7506 This is a very important sale for enthusiasts of military issues-do not miss this show! You are most welcome to come early on Wednesday to ensure sufficient viewing time. Included in this sale is a wonderful old-time World War II collection. This collection features an outstanding array of Military Payment Certificates (MPC), Allied Military Currency (AMC) with high grade replacements and other special items, and many highly sought pieces from around the globe issued during this era. A few words must be stated about this collector. The collector wishes to remain anonymous. He is in his mid 70s and is a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and Viet Nam. He joined the Air Force in 1945 and retired in 1969. His current passion is providing important assistance at the local coin shop. This individual has made important contributions to the fields of both coins and paper money. His interests have been diverse-at one time, he even had a large aluminum coin collection! He has been a collector for over 45 years. He began with United States coins and made a promise to himself never to collect paper money. However, the history and beauty of world paper money caught up with him and he was hooked! He started serious collecting over twenty years ago, but did limit himself to pieces from the World War II era. He hopes that other collectors will enjoy this material just as much as he did. On a personal level, he is well-liked and respected by his colleagues. The world paper money/MPC section will consist of approximately 1700 lots to be sold on Thursday, August 21. It is important to note that this sale significantly exceeds our previous high for number of world lots offered. In fact, it is quite possible that this offering is the largest ever brought together at one time for sale anywhere! We have placed the MPC in the enviable "leadoff" position. It is truly a terrific group-over 100 lots of MPC and related material! This selection is sprinkled with high grade types, a wonderful mixture of printings, special serial numbers, and other goodies. Among the highlights are: LOT 38 10 Dollars #M35/MPC 847 Series 521 LOT 64 5 Dollars #M55/MPC 876 Series 611 Plate position One! LOT 79 10 Dollars #M70/MPC 907 Series 661 LOT 95 20 Dollars #M98/MPC 938/1 Series 692 The plate position one 5 Dollars Series 611 is truly superb; it is a fresh, original beauty. Throughout the Allied military currency section, you will see many scarce, high grade types as well as replacements and other special offerings. AMC highlights include: LOT 738 Germany 100 Mark #197d? 1944 Serial letter prefix "m" LOT 580 Denmark 50 Kroner #M5? ND (1945) Archive Specimen LOT 1044 Japan 1000 Yen #76a ND (1951) Block letters B-B LOT 1045 Japan 1000 Yen #76b ND (1951) Block letters D-D LOT 1046 Japan 1000 Yen #76b ND (1951) Block letters E-E The German piece is worthy of special mention. Very few with serial letter prefix are known. Recently, many people saw this piece in our display case, but initially passed it up quickly because they thought it was the readily available 100 mark! Albert Pick was aware that this piece existed, but could not offer an explanation. It is believed to have come from the late Amon Carter's vast AMC collection. Further information regarding this piece is most welcome. We will offer an outstanding array of World War II notes from around the globe. In order to allow some time to reflect on the MPC and AMC pieces, I will write a separate Gram installment soon on these items. Finally, a few Dallas amenities add up in a big way. The bourse is comfortable on one's feet; lodging is modestly priced and close to the airport; last year, the weather was comfortable-not too hot. Also, the cuisine is quite good. Please contact me at grbaypa@aol.com if you have further questions. We look forward to seeing you in Dallas. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Thanks for Joel Shafer for the item on the forthcoming auction. In spite of his careful and artful attempts to keep the seller?s identity secret, most of us know who it is and I believe that it has been mentioned here in the Gram. Can someone check that for me? Anyway, we will certainly mention the name again, but not today. We will call him computer man today because his initials are RAM (like computer memory). No, l will just call him Ram like a first name. I believe that Ram told me that it is OK to identify him here in the Gram, but not in the print media. That is the way that we like it here at that Gram. I also hope to have Ram as the guest of honor at the MPC barbeque. (Ram, please consider this the invitation and please RSVP so that we can include this special feature in the listings.) Joel singles out the Allied military 100 marks note with prefix letter for special discussion above. In the printed catalog he calls it the most intriguing lot in the sale (possibly he said one of the most intriguing). He is correct about that. I can add some more information about this note. It did not come from the Amon Carter collection. RAM bought if from me. I bought it in Germany from an interesting source which even now must remain anonymous. When I first reported this find in the Bank Note Reporter I received many comments. The most interesting was from Ken Bressett, numismatic scholar and long-time friend. Ken, along with Neil Shafer, is one of the early, serious researcher into AMC. They identified the Forbes and Stecher-Traung printer?s marks on AMC and many other things. They wrote the ultimate AMC article for the Whitman Journal in the 1960s as has been discussed here before. Anyway, Ken wrote to me that he could and did not believe that the notes with prefix were genuine, unaltered, notes. I understoond his position because I had had the same thoughts. I sent him the note for examination. It was one of those Fred surprises. I just sent it. He was surprised, but pleased to have the opportunity to examine the piece. He told me the following when we next met face to face at an ANA convention. He said that he had spent an entire day examining the notes. He had studied every aspect and done everything that he could think of to prove that it was a fantasy alteration (at best). UV light, fancy scope, touch, feel, paper, serial numbers, ink. He probably even asked the dog for an opinion, but could find nothing wrong with the note. Later Joe Boling examined the same or similar note under his fancy scope and also could not find anything wrong. Of course, because we believe them to be genuine, original products does not mean that we can explain them. A few theories have developed, but none are convincing. Let me say right here that I do not believe that this is a Russian replacement. That was my first thought (I see replacements everywhere). If it were a replacement, we would have seen more of them and on other denominations too. The short answer is that I believe that it was an expedient repair made in the printing plant to fix some broken type on the numbering machine. My theory above is not definitive. Far from it. Indeed, I hope that you are not convinced that this is a legitimate, if mysterious, note. I hope this because I would like to buy it! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== letters/submissions for Gram 1000 special double issue should be sent to MPCGram1000@yahoo.com Dear Gram, I got the Gram for I think 3 days last week, then it stopped and has not started up again. Whats happening? If possible, please get it started again, and also can I get the one back copy which discussed the MPC Replica set (which I have bought) As I'd like to find out more about it. Thanks JS Dear Gram, OK. All you people who were sad that I was not going to make Dallas, take notice. Looks like I will be around on Thursday probably for the auction, but have to leave shortly after that for the family vacation. Thursday will be the only day that I will even be in the DFW area so let me know where everyone will be so we can meet somehow. I have not been keeping track of the barbque schedule so if it is Thursday let me know. Started my new job with the US Government on Monday so everyone that flies the airways can rest assured that I will be making the airlines do the right thing. Bill McNease Dear Bill, Thanks for the notice. I am glad that I will be driving to Dallas! Thursday will be the big day because that is when the good stuff is sold. On the other hand many Festers will not be there on Thursday. We can have a micoFest on Thursday.
