From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 986 Date: Thursday, August 07, 2003 9:53 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 986 Thursday August 7, 2003 Howard Sarg Daniel Honored By John Wilson As the 52nd President of the American Numismatic Association, I was honored to give President's Awards to Fred & Judy (the Boss) Schwan and Howard A. Daniels lll. At MPC Fest lV I gave the award to Fred and Judy (the Boss) Schwan. I wanted to give the award to Howard at the Philippine Collectors Forum. Unfortunately, I couldn't connect with a proper time to do it at this function. BNR Editor David Harper did take a picture outside the meeting, which more then likely will appear in the next issue. It was my great honor to present awards to these three individuals who have contributed greatly to our numismatic hobby in numerous ways. For information on past Presidential Award recipients go to: http://www.money.org/presawards.html I was honored to serve as the 52nd ANA President. I want to sincerely thank all the MPC Gram participants for contributing to a great two years for the ANA and our great hobby. ANA membership is over 30,000 and we have over 500 coin clubs. Please consider joining the ANA where you not only join but you belong. Also, on behalf of the ANA thank you to the MPC Gram for your very strong support for the Association. I know that the 53rd President of the ANA Gary Lewis, along with his board and headquarters staff headed by Executive Director Chris Cipoletti, will continue to improve the ANA. If anyone has any questions regarding ANA please contact President Lewis at: GELEWIS@aol.com or Executive Director Cipoletti at: cipoletti@money.org or Governor John Wilson at: johnancyw@aol.com or if you want to join e-mail or call Rudy Bahr or Sandy Schultz at: membership@money.org or 1 (800) 367-9723. Thanks again for a fantastic two years and hope to see you at a show down the road Baltimore ANA The Philippine Collectors Forum By Ray Czahor The Philippine Collectors Forum was a tremendous success by any measure. Approximately 75 interested collectors attended, including a number of Gramsters, including Larry Smulczenski, Gary Lewis, Howard Daniel, Mel Steinberg, Ron Waddell, and probably a few others whom I did not note. Most stayed from the beginning at 1PM until we finally broke up at about 5:15PM. I understand it was the largest educational forum at the Baltimore ANA except for the Boy Scouts who had about 100 attendees. Neil Shafer started the program with "In the Beginning-The Thrill of Discovery." He said he was fascinated with this coinage that had United States of America on them and being stationed with the Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. in the 1950s, began to research government records and offices for information. That led to his well-known black covered book published in 1961: "United States Territorial Coinage for the Philippine Islands." From there he researched paper money under the US which lead to "A Guide Book of Philippine Paper Money" in 1964. Neil had lots of interesting stories to tell which will be covered in other articles. Of interest to WWII collectors, he mentioned that he and Guerilla Currency guru, CM Nielson of Salt Lake City may collaborate on a new book, a significant update to Neils book of 1974. We certainly encourage that effort. Dr. Gregory Pineda was the second speaker and gave a fascinating slide show on proofs, patterns, vignettes of Philippine paper money. These showed many RARE or SCARCE pieces of his own collection and other museum pieces and was a walk in history of Philippine currency from the Spanish issues to first Central Bank issue in 1949. Many of these were first time seen for most of us Philippine collectors. John Grost who is co-author of The Numismatic Aspects of Leprosy, presented a slide show called: Money of the Culion Leper Colony. He presented an informative history of the Culion Leper Colony and depiction of their money's used (and why they are usually in such poor condition). The presentation had strong interest to the attendees. Ken Seymore talked at length on grading of Philippine coins, both from a practical and philosophical standpoint Those collectors of certified Philippine coins were very interested in his opinion on why certain services grade as they do, particularly that the figure side of the coin is considered the obverse and its condition carries more weight than the shield/date side. I gave a short talk: The Challenge of Collecting Philippine Stocks &Bonds. Varieties, errors, overprints, Specimens and neat vignettes can all be collected on stocks and bonds. John Wilson, ANA President, and his wife, Nancy, came in and welcomed everyone after the presentation. He complimented us on the intense educational program presented in conjunction with the Baltimore ANA, and he said ours was the largest group by far of all the meetings he had attended at that time. He mentioned that wanted to present the Presidential Award for helping young collectors to Howard Daniel during our forum but we were so busy doing presentations, he had to do the ceremony outside our door. Each attendee to the PCF received the first ever Philippine wooden five centavos, a Unc 1938M or 1941M ten centavo, and a copy of the 11th edition of my Varieties List. Also at the end of the PCF 28 door prizes donated by dealers and collectors were distributed to attendees. In addition, 3 exhibits of rare and interesting Philippine numismatic items were on display. Highlighted were an uncirculated 1906S peso, RARE paper issues and a large number of Spanish Philippine RARE and scarce patterns, counterstamps, medals, and Revolutionary issues. During the PCF a number of individuals described "unique" items they brought in for "show and tell." Discussion centered on the future of PCF. General consensus was to hold it again, on the West Coast in the future (maybe San Jose in 2005), and at the ANA annual show in Pittsburgh, PA next year. A donation was received from a serious collector to register the PCF with ANA as a club. Also, it was suggested that Fred and the MPCGRAM may be a medium for getting the word out on future PCF activities. (I have not talked to Fred yet!) Significantly to me, only Coin World send a publicist to cover the PCF. Other major numismatic publications were notably absent although I am sure Neil and Howard will give us some coverage in their columns. This was a great event to support and be part of. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== It is obvious that the Philippine Collectors Forum was a huge success. That is wonderful to be sure. It was enough alone to make me regret not attending the convention and to consider attending next year. Furthermore, the very idea of having the event was a stroke of extraordinary initiative. It is exactly the kind of event that the ANA convention lends itself too. It is wonderful. It is also tragic that more such innovations are made by grass roots collectors. We are certainly pleased that we were mentioned specifically as a possible means of disseminating information about future forums. We will certainly be pleased to do that. Send us reports and we will get the word out. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== letters/submissions for Gram 1000 special double issue should be sent to MPCGram1000@yahoo.com Dear Editor, To say that you added greatly to my knowledge of the AMC 100 Mark would certainly be an understatement (this one example is among many reasons why another edition of World War II Remembered is in great need). I had never seen this note before and may well never see it again. In Memphis, it caught the attention of virtually everyone who saw it. As stated, I will write more soon about some terrific World War II pieces offered in Dallas. Joel Shafer Dear Editor, The MPCGRAM Does it again!! I've had two more sets of the 2003 Memphis mini Fest notes sell for the $25.00 donation to the ANA Military Scholarship Fund. Thank You, Readers!!! David I have three of Kevin Neidy's intaglio eagle cards for the Colorodo (sic) Springs minifest left; $20 donation to the Military Scholarship Fund plus $1 postage to me. I also have two of Harold Kroll's cards for the summer seminar and several of his cards for the CS minifest available, all at $10 each (those payments go to him) + $1 postage (per shipment, to me). Joe Dear Esteeemed Editor, During my trip out West, I visited the store where RAM assists. I can see why he is assisting because the place is huge and customers and staff can get lost in it. I wish RAM would not remain anonymous for the auction of his collection because I would very much like to see his name in print for my library. RAM should allow Joel to have his name somehow added to the catalog with an insert or something else. OK RAM? I will write something about the recent ANA for your readers but I still need to dig out my journal and notes to be able to do a decent job with it. The Master Sergeant Daniel Dear Sarg, I belive that a large portion of Ram?s material will be in the St Louis auction. That is a chance to have his name on a catalog. However, there certainly is no reason that you cannot write his name on the title page of your catalog(s).
